I'm 21 and try to hit the gym mon-fri. I only weight 175 pounds. My question is on the weekends when I go club'n is it healthier weight-wise to just drink Vodka instead of beer? I don't want a beer gut.

vodka, its about 65 calories/shot i believe. Now some of the otheres, like Jager....avoid them if you're trying to avoid calories.

i would guess beer is the worst depending on what you mix your vodka with. i read an article in Golf Digest that asked: what is the healthiest drink to have at the turn or after the round? the answer was wine, but who in the heck is gonna drink wine on a golf course. geesh. i think beer came in last place though. not 100% sure.

btw welcome to the forums :gift:

Drink Bacardi, I saw a billboard that said 0 cal, and when mixed with diet cola 0 cal as well, relatively healthy calorie wise...

but this is all relative, as I know most ppl when they get drunk, get rather hungry, and that will ruin your night of 0 cal drinking real quick

OMG people still think this CRAP?!?!? a SHOT of vodka and a full 12 ounce beer have the SAME amount of alcohol in them. That's why vodka is given in SHOTS as a measurement and not 12 ounce bottles. Now 12 ounces of vodka all at once will seriously fvck you up compared to 12 ounces of beer. But for standardized measurements, they are the same.

If you are looking to LOSE or MAINTAIN weight, then don't drink at all.

Why? well alcohol causes spikes in testostorone in both males and females. The problem is, males turn excess testostorone to estrogen by a process call aromatase (pronouced aroma-tise). When a male gets drunk, their hormone receptors start getting more estrogen instead of testostorone because of the newly created estrogen. Estrogen in males does the same thing as in females. It causes the body to store fat and expand the mammary glands. Hence the terms beer belly and man titties. The added calories from drinking and carbs don't help either althought much less of those is absorbed then people and advertising puts on. Drinking 5 drinks with 100 calories total each, and your body might absorb half of that. Just depends on your genetic make up and your bodies predesposition.

If you really insist on drinking, learn to get to a "buzzed" state and stay THERE. Don't go into excess. The more you drink, the more free floating estrogen that will be formed in your body and the more fat you will put on that night and the subsequent day.

Also, be aware that man titties are a cumulative effect. Once the mammaries start to expand they don't go back to their original size EVER.

Oh... and for those that don't believe what I wrote above... here's a link to Wikipedia for a source.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aromatase

What it does.
The enzyme is located in the endoplasmic reticulum of the cell and its activity is regulated by tissue specific promotors that are in turn controlled by hormones, cytokines, and other factors. The principal action of the enzyme transforms androstenedione to estrone and testosterone to estradiol. The aromatase enzyme can be found in many tissues including gonads, brain, adipose tissue, placenta, blood vessels, skin, bone, endometrium as well as in tissue of endometriosis, uterine fibroids, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer.

What causes it
Factors known to increase aromatase activity include age, obesity, insulin, gonadotropins, and ALCOHOL. Aromatase activity is decreased by prolactin, AMH, and smoking. Aromatase activity appears to be enhanced in certain estrogen-dependent local tissue next to breast cancer, endometrial cancer, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids.

Thanks Dad, we'll remember not to binge drink. If we do, will you ground us?

Vodka is around 80 cal's, Light beer is around 90-100. Vodka has less, and they're coming out with low carb vodka too (God knows why).

Unless your are drinking 200 proof alcohol, (ie 100% alcohol content by volume) you are going to get calories and carbs from any alcoholic drink. Alcohol is made by the process of certain types of microbes, usually yeast, that digest carbohydrates and their WASTE byproduct is alcohol produced by those organisms. However, the microbes can't usually consume all the carbs and turn them into alcohol because the alcohol eventually kills off the microbes. So no matter what you drink, you are going to get calories from it if it contains alcohol. Trust me, you don't want to consume 200 proof alcohol or you WILL go blind.

Now, If you want to get a good buzz the fastest, with the least amount of drinks, which in turn will give you the least amount of calories overall, drink something with high proof content. 151, and ever clear are good choices for this. However, since it IS a lot of alcohol by content, they are going to be very strong. Most people have to "mix" those with something else to bring the edge off their harsh taste which in turn adds more calories and carbs to the mix.

If you REALLY are into managing your weight, and still want to drink. Do this.

Down a shot of 151. Do it fast and harsh and have a glass of water to chase it down. Now, carry a glass of water around with you and tell other people it's vodka seven. Drinking is mainly a social thing anyhow. Now, every hour on the hour, drink another shot of 151.

You will maintain a good buzz, stay just under the legal limit for alcohol content in most states, look like you drinking as "much" as everyone else since people will see the water and assume you are drinking way more, and you won't gain weight through caloric overdose nor excess aromatase effects. This won't get drunk to the point of passing out or puking, but it will get you a nice buzzed feeling by your second shot after the first hour.

I do this on occasion too. Then again, I like the taste of beer too which has less calories then a soda or fruit juice drink.

Its called a beer gut and not a vodka gut for a reason.
