Going clubbing for my second time. The first time I went, I didn't drink because I was driving.

Tonight I'm going to have some drinks because I have a ride.

Unfortunately something just struck me -- I have no idea what to order, and it's not like I can have a discussion about it with the music so loud.

While I have had alcohol plenty of times before, I've never ordered it from a bar. (Usually it was my parent's alcohol, lol)

So, for example, if I want a screwdriver do I say "could I get a screwdriver please" or do I say "vodka with orange juice please"? I know this sounds like a dumbass question, but coming from soneone who's never done it before, it's not that dumb, really.

And what about beer? I don't really like the stuff that much, but I might have one drink. Is it a given that a bar will have most beers? I don't even know what kind of beer I like (all tastes the same to me?) What's the difference between "on tap" and, er, "not" "on tap"?

Thanks guys.

Order it by name. So say screwdriver.

The way to go though is Long Island Ice Tea.

On tap - being pumped from keg
Not on tap - bottle or can

On tap = with tap water added in it??

You'll just say screwdriver if you want a vodka orange. Do yourself a favor and get a bottle of chivas. Enjoy the night out with your friends and don't come back here posting that you're drunk.

So just order your favourite drinks by name. They know the score, I promise.

Got another question ... are there any questions I might be asked with certain drinks?

I know what a twist is, and I know martinis can be shaken or stirred ;-)

But what else might I be asked with certain drinks?

I like tap beer - but if you're not a beer drinker, then stick with mixed drinks... Seagrams/7up is gud, Coke and Rum is gud...

Just don't make the mistake I did when I first went to a bar.

I see a sign that says "Highballs - $1". So I walk up to the bartender.

Me - "Can I get a highball?"

Bartender - "What kind?"

Me (thinking he may have not heard me) - "A highball!"

Bartender - "Um...ok"

And then he mixes me a rum and coke.

Poor, Poor Alphathree33. I'm not mocking you or anything. I just think it's sad that none of your friends have helped coach you through this.

First off, You don't have to say please and thank you at a bar. You do that by tipping the bartender. If you tip them well, they will take care of you. That might mean making your drinks stronger or free drinks.

Second. If you drink in a bar, try to stick to something very simple, like beer, or something Very Very strong, like a Long Island Iced Tea. You don't want to be embarrassed when you order a drink while everyone is up at the bar and have the bartender ask you for your ID because you sound like you're underage.

Third, and final. The difference between on tap and not "on tap", is on tap beer comes from the tap that is plugged into a keg in the back room. Not on top beer is beer in a bottle, or can. Chances are the bar won't have canned beer, since bottled beer tastes sooooo much better.

Oh, and if you're going to drink heavy, don't start mixing drinks - beer with mixed drinks or wine, etc...

I did that once....

just once....

Long Island
Tequila
Gin
Triple Sec
Vodka
Rum
Sweet & Sour Mix
Splash of cola

That is the most generic mixture, but some places leave out certain components. I prefer to leave out the Tequila.

Didn't know you were supposed to tip bartenders. I bought drinks for some girls last time and I didn't tip (drinks are expensive as it is, lol) . Is that a big no no? Oh well, at least I know for this time that I should leave tips. Still though I think it's rude not to say at least please.

It's a club not a bar so mostly standing and they check your ID at the door very, very carefully.

So if I wanted a miller lite I would either say miller lite on tap or just miller lite if I wanted a bottle?

Red Devil

* 1 1/2 oz Vodka
* 1 1/2 oz Peach schnapps
* 1 1/2 oz Southern Comfort
* 1 1/2 oz Sloe gin
* 2 oz Triple sec
* 2 oz Orange juice
* 1 splash Grenadine

as you can see, that's a LOT of booze in there. prepared to get drunk rather quickly. 4 of those and i'm usually set for the night.

You would have to ask if it is on tap.

If you wanted a Miller Lite then you ask for a Miller Lite draft... If they don't have it, they'll tell you...

Here's some hints for you:
Beer: Beers "on tap" will be from the pour spouts behind the counter. It's that big metal thing kind of resembling a soda fountain. See those funny-shaped handles that the barkeep is pulling? Each handle has the name of the beer / brew on it. Personally I like beer on tap a LOT more than in a bottle. I refuse to drink beer from a can. Ick.
Beers in bottles / cans are usually lined up on a shelf behind the bartender. Don't ask "what do you have?"

When ordering drinks, don't ask too many questions unless the bar is nearly empty. Bartenders in crowded clubs have way more to do than to tourguide you.

Drinks you could order: (These are simple and good for the novice drinker)
Strong drinks:
Long Island
Mai Tai
Zombie

Chick drinks: Order these if you're a wuss or if you're ordering for a girl who doesn't know what to get:
Apple Martini
Amaretto Sour
Midori Sour
Cosmopolitan

Don't order a Shirley Temple unless you want other guys asking you to dance. This is, of course, if you are a guy.
