Beginner question about HSF for 800mhz T-Bird & KT7

Hi there,

I'm currently in the process of building my first PC (and the forums and guides here, at Sharky's, and Ars have been a huge help,) but I've got a question. Is a heatsink/fan necessary if I don't plan on overclocking?

I ordered the processor from Azzo.com and I'm guessing it's OEM because I all I got was the chip in a little clear plastic container. I'm going to put it into a KT7, and then put it all into a Fong Kai FK-603 case.

I don't want to fry my chip (duh), but I also don't really want to wait any longer to start assembling. If I do need a heatsink/fan, what's the best solution for a Socket-A Thunderbird?

Thanks.

Chrome Orbs have been getting some good press over their cooling... and are readily available (atleast, where i am (australia))

You can get Chrome Orbs which have been modified to clear the capacitors on the KT7, or you can do this yourself. make sure you do however, get the Chrome Orb, as they've been modified to fit the Socket A (which is slightly different than Socket 370) and balance on the 4 rubber feet ontop of the processor (the older screw-on ones didnt)

make sure you go and read a few tutorials on how to install these (and other Heatsinks), as you can CRUSH YOUR CHIP i'm not sh!tting you... The Coppermine processors' die is more durable than the AMD dies that they have been using on Durons and T-Birds

yes you def. need a heatsink and a fan. If you don't plan on overclocking (why wouldn't you with a tbird ) a retail heatsink/fan should do just fine. Just ask around here for one. )

I had a 800mhz T-bird that when overclocked only gave me 850mhz using the Gorb (Golden Orb). I was rather unimpressed.

I then decided to buy a Alpha 6035MFC cooler and see if I could push it even higher. I ended up getting 950mhz with the Alpha! Big difference from the Gorb.

So in my opinion the Alpha 6035 is the superior cooler for Socket A T-bird's.

Please Please Please don't run that T-bird without a HSF. Without cooling you'll have a nice keychain in about 8 seconds (literally). I use a PAL 6035 with the Delta fan and Artic Silver compound, got a 84W peltier on the way too. Since this is your first system don't worry about peltiers but definetely get the Alpha HSF.

eheheh,
486's had cooling on the chip.
Why would a system 1000x stronger not need it?
Get a high quality HSF.
Remember, you get what you pay for
