If I still shot as much as I did this time last year I would definitely buy one. Well that and the fact that next week Apple has an announcement that sounds like it's going to hit the wallet hard.

The AF upgrade is worth the cost alone.

So many goodies...MKIII, Wacom 5, iPad 3, etc.

I'm really pretty happy for now with my iPhone 4S as my main camera. I haven't touched my T2i (which I love to death) for nearly 2 months now...so yeah, same boat - if I did more shooting with dSLR's, I'd be more interested, but right now I'm shooting at least 500 photos a week on my 8mp iPhone.

Very cool camera though, very interested to see both pictures & video and some comparisons from the MKII!

Canon might have an excess of 5DII sensors so they sold them to Apple to put in the iPad 3. Now Apple is using 2 per iPad. One for the front facing camera and one for the rear facing

Now for those who are smarter than me how does this spec wise compare to the d800? Obviously I dont think there has been any hands on preview of eithor yet so I guestimations are welcome.

At first blush I was impressed, but as it settled in, I'm joining the "meh" crowd. That's mostly due to the high price. I know street prices tend to be lower than MSRP, but I don't see that happening with this camera. So the MKIII is essentially offering upgraded AF, two stops of low light shooting and improved movie mode. All very cool but not worth $1k above the MKII. Inflation, exchange rates and all that jazz...i know. But I can't seem to get excited. Maybe I'm just jaded from using the same shitty AF in the last 2 5Ds that I see its inclusion as an obligation, not something to be touted as a defining feature.

The D800, of course, also factors into the equation. If its high ISO matches the D700, than, IMO, it's a better cam for the money than the 5DMkIII. And whilst not mentioned in the press release...I'm going to assume Canon did not upgrade the environmental sealing.

That said...I'd totally still buy it at $2800. :awe:

For 99.999999999999% of users, it's a wash. Canon has faster frame rates, likely better high ISO. Nikon has more megapixels. But they are both cutting-edge cameras.

I think they are in a difficult position. They had to put the 5D MKIII between the 5D MKII and the new Canon EOS-1D X. So spec-wise, what are you going to do? The megapixels are already ridiculous - even my T2i's 18mp is more than I really use. And they don't want to step on the toes of the new C300 camcorder by putting in too many good video features, but they also had to recognize that it's being used by cinematographers in a variety of applications. So yeah, kind of meh. Still very cool though...if I had $3,500 lying around, I'd be picking one up too :awe:

Darn! They did not say "weatherproof."

They are saying "better" sealed vs moisture and dust...whatever that means.

It looks to be a great camera. I am very excited about the 5D MK III and the D800, though I will not be buying either. Here's hoping the D700 value drops like a rock.

explain the humor for me
Canon loves using pedestrian images for their sample photos. That one in particular is devoid of fine detail and mis-focused, not qualities you want when showing off a camera's studio/portrait capabilities.

Of course, we all know samples images are not indicative of the camera's real-world performance, but the largest camera company in the world has the resources to do better if they wanted (they have their pick of the litter of world class photographers itching to shoot their newest camera).

Exactly. Although I'm used to Canon's sample images, that one is really terrible.

Make it weigh 400g and I might be interesting; i'm leaning towards nex-7 or em-5.

IMHO, one have to take a lot of pictures to justify the hefty price.

$3500 for 5D mkIII body.
$2300 for 24-70mm f/2.8 L II.

It is going to be well north of $6K, if you include accessories, bag, tax & shipping.

with the comparison, The nikon seems to be the better deal. The only thing the canon has on TOP of nikon is the higher ISO range, and the higher resolution LCD. It seems that Nikon has Canon's Video beat with AF during video, uncompressed HDMI footage, and more 720p framerates. Also, better weather sealing (i'm certain) than the III. More AF points (51 vs. 61), but nikon has that awesome metering system as well.

Nikon has always had better built cameras, unless you're comparing to the 1 series... then the D4 is comparable...

But the question remains... what makes this camera $500 MORE than nikon's?

I'm not sure if the 5D mkIII is $500 better than the D800, but apparently Canon feels that it is $1000 better than the mkII.

To me the high ISO is what set the cameras a part if Canon didn't sacrifice IQ, and the better AF is a bonus.

http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/brent_stirton_shooting_eos_5d_mark_iii.do

I shot this Canon [EOS 5D Mark III] up to [ISO] 25,600 and it was, to my mind, at least as good as the file coming out of the EOS 5D Mark II at 1200 to 1600. So that’s a huge leap forward for me.”
A bold claim.

I think the paper spec racing has already ruined you.

Quite simply, when you ask anybody why they depend on brand X. It's always about the files. It feels natural to me when using ACR or DPP.

The whole AF based on points thing gets old fast. Especially with a 7D, I have all I need for birding. It will grab anything moving and lock on with no issues. Gulls, ospreys, sparrow, hummingbirds.

I don't do that everyday, so when shooting people, the 7D seems like an appliance. It just works.
I had my first oof shots I had in months the other day. It turns out I bumped the siggy's af switch off. Glad I still chimp it.
