Yea, I'm going to try and do a ride-along as well...do I need to try this before or after I actually put in my app?

I also have no military background but I have a decent history (no arrests/felonies/etc). I do have a bankruptcy on me and so-so credit right now, that won't affect me in landing a job will it?

Same, I am squeaky clean..24, not married, 2 year degree, no military, squeaky credit, etc, etc.

I'd do a ride-a-long just to see if it's what you want to do day-to-day. I am not sure if it gives you a leg up or not.

I swear the Twin Cities has been on a hiring freeze for 2-3 years for cops ... because everything I to to the website's, they're all on freezes.

Vivi - a lot of places have had a rough time in the last few years (I was laid off in '08). Another option is to consider part time / reserve until you can secure a full time position. That will definitely help you out.

Credit may, depending on your definition of so-so. As for a ridealong, it'll depend on the agency - I'd ask for one now. It certainly won't hurt!

so-so, meaning...I filed BK at a 720 (was due to a divorce a few years back, it's been 2yrs since discharged)...went down to a 530, and right now I'm sitting at 670 (almost) with no late payments, etc. I do have about $50k in debt due to (2) new cars (stupid me) right now...but a payment has never been missed on anything.

Cars shouldn't be an issue, 50K in credit cards would be a different story. It's mainly looked at for two reasons, one it shoes responsibility and organization. Two they look at as a potential area for you to go crooked if your in debt up to your eyeballs.

Nah...between my wife and I we have 4 cards..all 4 totaling less than $2500 and I don't plan on getting anymore.

Most law enforcement (state or federal) is frozen right now, unfortunately.

Damn.

The internet says cost of living there is 28% less than where I work, and their pay is WAY higher.

Like I said, it's the wealthiest city in America. It's (relatively) low risk, great benefits, great pay, tons of off duty gigs available (and managed by the PD itself) and you can carry your own gun. People leave federal law enforcement for jobs there. No one gets hired off the street. I had a friend that was 25 years old, had a BS in Criminal Justice with a minor in finance from a great school, went through their internship program (1 year long) and in the end was declined due to his active role in his college fraternity. They felt that he would be sympathetic to underage drinking, parties, etc.

That's pretty wild...haha. I think I'd be angry to get turned down on a great opportunity like that.

That just blows....did he end up being a cop elsewhere?

Nope, got picked up by a (digital) security company doing sales to police and emergency services customers. It's salary + commission so he's been making $200-$300k for the past couple years. Now he can afford to live in Plano, not just work there.

Study Jeopardy. If you can't answer every single question correctly you will fail the test.
Seriously though, just start running and doing pushups, you'll need plenty of practice with both to make it thru "boot camp"

LEO's are some of the best people you will ever meet. Of course you do have some that is on an ego trip BUT they are few and far between. They give a lot but get very little respect in return. You have to be tough skin - you will be called every name in the book and then some. Be prepared to met the good the bad and the ugly! ) Don't expect to make a truck load of money in this field - don't expect respect nor rewards. You can advance and make fairly well but nothing compared to medical. I've seen LEO's leave their professions to work in the medical field and sometimes double their salaries.

What ever you go into just make sure you have a level head and go in because that is WHAT you really want to do. Good luck!

Plano is not that expensive.

If he lives in University/Highland Park or Southlake and the likes, now that are expensive areas (comparison speaking to other areas in TX).

The west side of Plano is relatively expensive, compared to the rest of Texas. I grew up in UP and own a home in Colleyville, so I'm pretty well conscious of the scheme of things.

Not possible without experience on a tactical team or a spec ops background.

Who can join HRT?
Selection to HRT is open to all FBI Special Agents who have achieved a prescribed level of FBI investigative experience, are recommended to come to the HRT selection course by their Special Agent in Charge based on the quality of their work, and have demonstrated excellent firearms and physical fitness skills.

Tactical Experience Requirements.
To qualify for the Tactical Recruiting Program (TRP), you will need to bring some special skills, talents, and experience. All candidates will be rated based on their experience levels, and the most qualified will be eligible for this program. Each candidate will have the opportunity to summarize tactical training and experience in the Tactical Recruiting Program on-line application, which may be accessed after completing the Special Agent application. Here is a snapshot of those qualifications:

Must have at least 3 years of tactical experience in either law enforcement or the military.
Law Enforcement Experience:

With a Federal Agency tactical team (This category includes all Military Police.).

Or with a Local/County/State Agency or Department tactical team.

- Full-time tactical team experience will carry more weight than part-time experience.

- Completion of continuing education courses in at least three of the following: Basic SWAT • Advanced SWAT • Hostage Rescue • High Risk Arrest • Barricaded Subject • Basic Sniper/Observer • Advanced Sniper/Observer • Tactical Firearms • Mechanical Breaching

Military Experience – Army
Combat Arms experience. Service in Special Forces Group or Ranger Regiment will carry more weight.

Military Experience – Navy
Must have served in the Naval Special Warfare Community as a SEAL or Naval Special Warfare Officer.

Military Experience – Marine Corps
Combat Arms experience.

Military Experience – Air Force
Must have served in Combat Controller, Combat Rescue (Pararescue), or Tactical Air Control Party fields.

Seems you already need to be an agent in additional to having the tactical experience.
