Being extorted by neighbor over public parking - ignore?

So supposedly (I don't know the order of events, he could have parked after) my wife parked her jeep too close to some dick's car and the rubber spare tire touched his car (again, I don't know if this is true - my wife had room in front and does not recall touching another car, it's a public spot in NYC, dozens of cars swap in and out in a day). The jerk filed a police report (thankfully the report says "NO DAMAGE") and is now threatening to report it as a hit and run if i don't pay up or give my insurance info. My insurance laughed it off and told me to ignore him, now he's calling daily saying he has an "estimate" of all the damage. I found his car and took dozens of photos. there is no damage. Just ignore? Go back to the PD and waste more of their time over something so trivial?

I would consider filing a police report so at least its on record that he's bothering you. I would also suggest you get something in writing from your insurance company just to cover yourself.

Move away from NYC now. Thank me later.

I love NYC but in a nice place to visit kinda way ... even if I were super-rich I truly wouldn't want to live there!

Bro, its tempting... To elaborate, the quality of neighbor has plummeted and I'm surrounded by uncultured douchebags . Mom's who listen to raggaeton and shake that ass (literally, i kid you not) while waiting for their kids... Assholes like this guy looking to make a buck over someone who lives on the same floor (I'd let it go just to avoid elevator drama, not this guy) .. I'm honestly here to be near my elderly parents, the appeal of the city is getting lost on this Native..

Unfortunately there's jerks everywhere ... problem with NYC is the concentration levels make it impossible to avoid them all!

Also, dirt, noise, stress, crowds, traffic and expensive.

If you have a police report that says “no damage,” I think you’re fine. Ignore his calls or, if you know a lawyer, have the lawyer call him and scare the shit out of him with talks of harassment charges being filed with the cops.

Record everything. Don't speak to him directly unless you're in a public place where you can have your camera running in your pocket. Otherwise force him to communicate via voicemail, answering machine, text, anything that leaves a trail of what he says and threatens to do.

Having lived in NYC, they should just charge a lot more for that "free" street parking. Considering how much private parking spaces cost per month, NYC is leaving a ton of money on the table. Plus, it could encourage some people to get rid of the cars they don't really need and greatly improve the quality of life in many neighborhoods (eg taking back streets for people and reducing noise/pollution)
Also, dirt, noise, stress, crowds, traffic and expensive.
The noise/traffic/expense problem could be solved with some quick blows: ban private autos on more streets and end free street parking; and upzone a ton of areas to allow for more density. Many parts of the city are not ultra-dense and could support additional housing, but NIMBYism keeps that housing away.

As for his non-stop calling, just tell him if he keeps calling, you're going to file a complaint for harassment.
---

At a curiosity, if your insurance company laughed about his claim, even if you provided your info to the guy to get him off your back, wouldn't they just laugh at him directly and not give him a cent?

If he had another legal recourse he would have used it by now. Nothing left but to harass you hoping to get something happening. Ignoring him long enough and he will tire of getting nothing back for his efforts. After that he will either escalate or go away.

Take sufficient pictures of car without any damage. Make sure the pictures are time stamped. Then take a baseball bat to the car until your muscles fatigue. Clearly, the damage was caused after the supposed accident. Case CLOSED.
ATOT lawyer has spoken.

Me: "I know where you live. I know when you leave for work, where you go, and when you get home..."

Him: "What are you saying?! Is that some kind of threat?!"

Me: "Just making conversation..."

I'll be honest, I had "Words" with her, but I believe her - the car wasn't even there, if she felt the rubber nudge another car she would have moved forward. dude probably squeezed into the spot after us (my wife's a teacher and gets home earlier than most) and was too drunk to realize he was at fault.

He threatened to take me to small claims court, my insurance assured me they'd fight it and if the police report states "no damage" to not worry, so I shared my insurance just to get him off my back. they'll know how to deal with the likes of him. He's such an idiot, now I give his car the stink eye all the time and the elevator will be awkward, why would you start shit with your neighbors?
