If we are going on your criteria, the best generalization would be optimized for health. In which case, being fat is better than being starved, but it is not recognized as good.

This actually isn't the case. A fat person is better insulated and would survive better in a blizzard, for example. However, the fat keeps them from feeling the warmth as well as someone with less fat. This is one of the reasons that women typically like it to be warmer than men, because they on average have higher body-fat percentages.

You get worse gas mileage (especially if you have to buy a larger vehicle to fit in) and spend more on food (and spend more on gas for the more-frequent trips to grocery stores and restaurants). Life and health insurance are also more expensive, not to mention all the health problems (and costs) that can come about because of obesity.
