Being smart/educated is rather useless

I'm pretty convinced that as a senior in college, I am significantly better educated and more intelligent than maybe 75% of all college grads overall, but I've thought about this for some extent and it seems useless. Because I don't have a degree I can't earn very much at all regardless of how much I know. So what good does being intelligent/educated (minus a degree/certification) do for an individual?

edit: people getting a materialistic impression from this post so moved this up here;

So being intelligent can not and will not guarantee one security, safety, health, success, fame, fortune, wealth, physical well-being, love, friendship, happiness, satisfaction, nor a sense of achievement. So what exactly is being intelligent good for?

It's all about experience my man. Before experience must come education. If there's one thing I learned about life, it's that. You can't go into something you don't know enough about and expect to stay afloat

If you must ask that, then you're not very smart/educated.

What you could try is to get a lower position somewhere, work hard, and get promoted into something better. It's been done before.

And plus, it really isn't fair for someone with just brains and no degree to be "ranked" ahead of someone that spent much time in school working toward one. If that's the way the world worked, you'd see lots of kids THINKING they could make it without a degree and suffer as a result. The world we live in has done a great job of making degrees actually mean something in my view..

You know you are a very insulting person. Not to mention rude. :|

Anyways I'll clarify. I see alot of very intelligent people getting shafted by life and society, but OTOH I see alot of people with mediocre/subpar intelligence doing rather well.

Dude get over yourself.

What exactly brings you to compare yourself to so many college grads?

In response to you second question. Intelegence is nothing without the right attitude. Twerps like you who think their intelligent and figure the world will work for them never get any where. While the fools are working to educate and to learn. Think of what you got as a head start on a very long process. If you ever stop being educated you start being stupid.

There's more to life and success than intelligence. Lacking the ambition and personality it takes to succeed could also hamper your chances. Complaining about it definitely does not help either.

OuterSquare, you are absolutly correct what does that buy you? See the Denise Leary quote in my sig.

Unfortunatly, intelligent and educated are not enough to make it big in this country. Once you complete your education and get the piece of paper, do not expect the world to spread its legs and invite you in. What is now required is a big dose of ambition, you have to go out and sell your abilities. It is not easy, frankly there are lots of smart educated people out there, a lot of them are flipping burgers and driving cabs. If you expect the world to beat a path to your door then yom must be at the top of the class at the likes of CMU, otherwise you have to but out the effort, intelligent and educated are base line you need more to set yourself apart.

But then what does it mean to make it big? I you all you want in life is a title and a Beamer then I really feel sorry for you. Lifes true joys are simple, do not forget to live on the way to the top. Good Luck.

You seem to apply too much effort in your ridiclous insults. Big words that you found in your thesaurus really doesn't help your cause much either.

Find a new hobby while I leave my 8-year-old type remarks to myself.

Geesh, people here are piling in and beating on me. All I asked was a simple question.

I understand that ambition, hardwork and dedication are probably more important to success than intelligence.

I guess I'm saying that being intelligent seems kind of overrated.

Not to blindly attack you or anything, but if you expected everyone here to come in and completely agree with you, then reality really has not set in on you..

OuterSquare,

It's because he's an impotent little child living in a WWF fantasy world. You see, in real life, he would pee his pants at the thought of attacking you, or anyone above the age of 10.

The internet is a wonderful medium. It emboldens even the most cowardly.

Well, he wasn't the first one in here with insults. Not to mention that you win with the sheer number of them.

And Russ apparently gets his kicks from insulting people 1/10th his age over the internet. How courageous and honorable. I can only assume he's every bit as praiseworthy in real life.

Look, can you do me a favor and just stop? I wanted to actually learn something here and not participate in a flame war. I mean, one attack, ok fine, maybe you have a beef with me, there I hope you feel better, but must you continue to be disruptive to my thread?

guys, i cant believe u 2 are feuding in his post.

OuterSquare, i feel the exact same way.

I am pretty smart, was really good in school back when thinking mattered, like until 6th or 7th grade. then thinking didnt matter, how much brainless work you did mattered, and I started to fall behind.

then I was getting Bs, now as a sophomore in highschool im getting mostly C's.

I ask myself, what the hell is going on, with these stupid suck up girls getting A's just cuz they do their homework and participate and "care", when anyone could learn the stuff, as long as ur ready to put the time in.

the part that bothers me is that these are the stupid girls who are going to get into the good colleges, but one employer later on in life who took her over me to work for them, in any line of work, would have to be nuts.

Its the same for you, the kids who are 1/2 as smart but put twice the time in are gonna get the good jobs, and only if u are lucky enough to get a job with a future will u have a chance to prove yourself and gain status.

The U.S.'s education system sucks ass

OuterSquare, as others have already pointed out ambition and determination play bigger roles than raw intelligence. And I would like to throw in my own adition of luck . Having worked in the academic community, I have come across many people who are way above average in raw intelligence. I've met winners of the nobel prize in physics. Yet, the smartest man I have ever met teaches history at a community college .

You have to have ambition, determination, and luck to make it to the top of your chosen profession. Intelligence is a tool that can be used to make that climb faster. But its not enough on its own.

Yeah, but Russ NCNE rocks! 4 1/2? LMAO.

The U.S. public primary education system (elementary, junior high, high school) do suck. But U.S. universities and colleges are world renowned.

It seems from the way you have worded your question you are only concerned with $ / material things. Young folks like yourself generally have little/no experience or maturity. If you can't prove otherwise to an employer why would you expect the good $ ?
If you just want to get ahead fast
1 Alawys make your boss look good
2 Keep your nose brown
3 Sell yourself(not literally)
4 Steal anyones good ideas
5 Never get caught holding the bag
6 Always make your boss look good

If you prefer to earn it
1 Work hard
2 Sell yourself ""
3 Have a quantity of integrity
As far as in general "So what good does being intelligent/educated (minus a degree/certification) do for an individual?" either you are not as "intelligent" as you think you are or selfsatifaction is meaningless to you.
