Believe it or not I am considering upgrading from i7 920 to i7 2600k.

I know it sounds like madness. I have been waiting to upgrade to an SSD for months now. I know the next generation SSDs are going to be better in performance and stability. I also know they will be SATA III which my current MB does not support. My MB also does not have USB 3.0 and I see more and more devices coming out for that interface. If I sideways upgrade to SB, this is the MB I would purchase. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-464-_-Product

Also, as you already know the 920s run a little toasty especially when OC'D. SB seems to run much cooler. I would sell my current parts, meaning MB, CPU, and RAM. They are all in excellent condition and I have all the original boxes, manuals and accessories. I also may consider using them in the HTPC I plan to build.

They will be backwards compatible with your exisiting mobo and will run just fine at sata 3.0 speeds

in the real world, you're hardly going to notice the difference between 3.0 and 6.0 speeds with the next gen of SSDs anyways, so i wouldn't worry about it

get a new ssd, stick it in your existing system, and be happy

:thumbsup: This.

OP, upgrading from a 920 to a 2600K sounds like madness because it is madness!

Now here is a reasonable soul! Ok so here is the deal. Before I owned the "enthusiast" i7 platform, I was a socket 775 owner on a P35 Gigabyte board. I upgraded the CPU on that board 3 times. e4300 ---> e7200 ---> Q9650. I loved each one of those CPUs. They each OC'd like heck, and I felt like I got a performance bump each time I upgraded. In fact, I was able to go from a 2 core CPU to a quad core CPU on the same board! The Q9650 running at 4Ghz was by far my favorite. I wish I still had it vs. my current i7 920. Then I "upgraded" to the socket 1366 and the i7 920. I have never found it compelling to upgrade to any other CPU, and better yet, it is now pretty much a dead end platform.

Now comes socket 1155 and the P67 chipset. I get the impression the 775 and P35 days are back again! You know there is definitely a 6 core CPU coming for socket 1155 by the end of the year. Socket 2011 will offer an 8 core configuration. Initially it will probably come out as an enthusiast 6 core configuration. The the 8 core extreme version CPU will cost $1000+. Does this all sound eerily familiar?

The only odd part is that SB didn't launch as a 6 core derivative. Unless, a 6 core CPU will be out sooner than we think.

This is madness!

This. is. ANANDTECH!!

::kicks i7 920 into a hole::

Honestly man, I don't recommend you do this. I just went from an i7 920 @ 3.8 to a Sandy Bridge i5 2500k @4.4 and it's just a hair better, maybe 3 to 5 frames in some games. If anything, the little ticks that are cropping up because I haven't perfected the stability of my 2500k system yet are driving me nuts. I can't speak on the 2600k (though I kind of regret not getting it. ) Still, I say pass and save the cash for a big SSD.

I hear you on the the upgrade path for 1155, and it does appear to be a little better than 1366/1156, but you never know. It's not a safe reason to upgrade, as Intel loves switching sockets like a fat kid loves cake.

At least wait to upgrade to 2011. You really won't see better performance. If you have the bug get SSD, 12GB RAM, or Blu Ray. Don't waste that $400 upgrading to get 4 fps...

It's your money. But you're currently only running your 920 at 3.7GHz and 1.15v with a Noctua cooler. So I seriously doubt it's putting out much heat to begin with. It woudn't be much different than a 2600k @ 4.4GHz anyway.

Heat isn't the real issue here. Just admit it... you've got the upgrade bug. No shame in it.
