Do you have one of this things? Try it out. I have one but all I have connected is my laptop so I cannot speak for people who have desktops attached to it.

I'm talking real-world application of this thing, not just wattage readings from a multimeter. Because who knows, when you run a game, the wattage may peak above 200watts and along with a monitor, it will go over 350VA which is roughly 250watts tops and poof....
Last time I checked only one person reported a problem at FW. Maybe he didn't let the battery charge up.

PS: The number above is a UPC not a SKU (according to the nice home depot lady near me) but they could look up by it just the same, thanks!
Check the electrical department near the extension cords and surge protectors.

They are located by the generators and welding machines. Not by the surge protectors!

That's where I found them at my HD (near the surge protectors.) Folks may need to check several places.

Just picked up 6 of them, they had at least 20 left. They were in the electronics, a few near the extension cords, a few near the external walkway lights, a few by the electronic conduit / circuit breakers.

I went to three HD before I found these bad boyz. They were not anywhere...went to the stores and asked them to look em up and they had no stock...

Until I got to the store in boca, where they had a pallet of them...for 18 bucks each!

Got two charging up right now!

that gives me an idea, can we serial plug these UPS? i.e. two 350VA UPS one plug-in to another could give you 190W+190W performance? or it doesn't work that way? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm not engineering major and the last time I learned physics-electricity was in high school

But you can buy TWO, one for the monitor and one for your computer . . . $38 is quite reasonable for a complete UPS solution.

Why can't you plug one UPS into another UPS for double the uptime?
You could plug one into the other and get more run time, but not double. I did this at work when we had a lengthy outage. Shutdown one server and took the UPS off it and plugged it into another to extend the battery.

The manual specifically states NOT to do this.
(of course you "could")

But you will get "best" results using a single ups for (up-to-its) it's RATED power even if it means using a BIGGER UPS or using a UPS for the monitor and one for the computer.

It's good enough for my 1.2GHz Duron & 17" monitor. I can reboot the system 2 times, then bring the UPS upstairs and it still boots up a PIII with 15" LCD. Well worth the $19.

Do you really need one for your monitor? I guess if you are going to try to shut down really quickly or something but otherwise, losing power to your monitor doesn't cause data loss.

Okay, time for some real-life info on UPS's. I found this out myself in the long run. Get the biggest VA rating that you can afford!

My Custom-built System:

19" Sony Monitor

Case includes:
400W Antec P/S
1.33 AMD Athlon
Radeon 8500 videocard
(2) 7200 Maxtor HD
(1) Yamaha CDRW
(1) Pioneer DVD
(1) SB Soundcard
(1) 10/100 network card.

My UPS is the CyberPower 725SL (725VA/400W). I only get 9 minutes runtime with just my monitor and computer plugged into it. And this was just when the computer was at idleing, doing NOTHING. The box for my UPS says 20-65 minutes for a "normal workstation". So don't go by what the box tells you. Also, if I leave the power switches on, on my computer and monitor, my UPS will not work! It won't allow the devices to turn on, because there is too much power drain. I have to manually turn on both my monitor and computer, AFTER I turn on the UPS.

I doubt this 350VA will even allow a computer to run 1 minute. Maybe LCD users and people with PII/Celeron/AMD K6 may be in luck. Make sure you can return it if it doesn't work out for you. If you take a look at UPS's in the stores, you will note that they are all becoming bigger, and increasing in VA. They are discontinuing these lower VA models, because they don't have enough power to keep a current computer up and running. You want a UPS that at least gives you 1-2 minutes to shut down the system.

Well, if the power goes out and you can't SEE, you are stuck with CTRL+ALT+DEL . . . if you are in the middle of a Doc or programming, you may not be able to save properly.

ALSO, if you are not attending your computer during a poweroutage - use the UPS SOFTWARE to automatically shut down the computer.

And MrCoyote, you could use TWO 350va UPSes (1 for the monitor and 1 for the computer) to approximate what your 725 gives (possibly unless you are burning a CD while watching a DVD) . . . I only need about 90 seconds to "save" most anything and completely shut down.

Of course, normally I work with my Notebook plugged into a UPS . . . I can NEF "indefinately" during most outtages.

Home Office UPS 350VA ( F6H350-SER ) - Quote: ?At less than $100, it offers fantastic protection for your network? Finally, we decided to put Belkin's claim of 35 minutes of battery runtime to the test. We were pleased to record a runtime of 31 minutes for our energy-efficient server once we pulled the plug from the Home Office UPS.?

can a palm pilot be a server?

actually - we get brownouts all summer and the cheaper UPS's without AVR, need to be unplugged, or they shut down when the computers could keep running. beep beep beep ....

they are much better than a $19 surge protector if you don't have low voltage

For those of you who want a UPS with true sinewave output and enuf wattage at a fair price, go here for refurbs from a top-notch company.
All load-tested and w/new batteries; great service, resonable s/h.

ie APC SmartUPS 1400Va/950w $199.99 + s/h
