I got the $7 USB to ethernet adapter too.
HKSturboKID: You can't get a crimping tool for $14 Omagh apparently lives in Korea. Crappy crimpers start at around $20 from shady online vendors with another $5-$7 in shipping. If you want to do it right, forget the tools and get a spool of solid core wire and some punchdown-less keystone jacks and install proper jacks in your walls. You don't even need a patch panel - just get a 6 or 8 hole keystone for the closet.
Otherwise, just buy pre-made cables at Dell, Best Buy, Target, 7-11, or the Texaco Quick Mart. There's no need to spend the exorbitant amount of time and money making your own. For the hubless folks (a.k.a. sorry-ass modem users), crossover cables are available in every length and color nowadays at every store. A few years ago you had to look up wiring diagrams and buy crimpers etc. if you wanted anything other than a 7' crossover cable but now even Target has a full selection of crossover cables on the shelf.
