It's 30 bucks at Best Buy. It doesn't look too good, but if someone wants to steal my laptop then any cable isnt going to stop them. Would this cable be enough of a deterrent to casual theft in a dorm room at a small college (2100 kids)?

I do not get how those are going to stop people from stealing your laptop. My roommate had one, and all he did was tie it around teh leg of his desk and put the screw in on teh side to secure the metal rubber covered rope. It is a deterrrent, but if someone really wants to steal it, then they could do it.

So what do you think is the best way to keep a laptop from being stolen (other than putting it in a safe...). I'm gonna have two roommates so there is a lot bigger risk of my door being left open...

I believe the lock is used to delay the thief from stealing the lappy. if they really want to steal it, they can always force the lock and broke it

Keeping your laptop safe in your room is tough...a thief who gets into the room while its empty has more time and privacy to work with. (I went to a college where we all had to have laptops, and there were lots of stories of them being stolen.)

Those cable locks are great for when you're working in the library/cafeteria/coffee house and will occasionally be out of site of the laptop. When you have it in your room I'd just suggest storing it out of site whenever possible -- most thieves seem to look for things left out in the open, and won't rummage around much.

In my experience your major enemy is the college physical-plant crew. They have access to your room whether the door is locked or not. All of the physical-plant workers I met were, at best, less reliable that the average person, and I personally had a number of incidents with them.

Get insurance.

Even better: check to see if your parents' home insurance will cover your belongings at school (this is often the case).

Take pictures of your rig, and save receipts. Make backups of your data.

Insurance = peace of mind.
