I think the A's made out pretty well in this trade. God knows Oakland needed serious help in the bullpen, and Dotel is a good closer who needed a fresh start (and a little cash to sweeten the deal never hurts). They're giving KC some good prospects in Wood and Teahen, but they both play positions Oakland is already stocked at.
I'm not. For all the posturing of him being a top ten player, he's still a .280 hitter with mid level power. Everyone keeps saying "this is the year he lives up to his potential." Let me tell you this--he's 27, and if he's ever gonna amount to a squirt of p!ss, now's the time. For all his supposed "tools" he's still very average. For God's sake, he was at BEST the 4th best player in Missouri, let alone baseball, and that's assuming he's better than Sweeney (which is a whole other argument.)
.287 lifetime BA, .352 OBP, and .482 slugging, and OPS of .834. Another case of the media building somebody up because they've never seen him play. Average numbers, and he's at his prime. Conversely, look at Edmonds in St. Louis. Having a year widely panned as being in an extended slump, yet the same, or better, numbers as Beltran. Easily the most overrated player in baseball.
For all the naysayers, I'll say this - Beltran always has an above average 1st half of the season but gets on fire during the 2nd half. Also, it's almost rare to have a hitter hit a good amount of Homeruns and still have almost the same amount of stolen bases.
You have to admit, he's more than a good player, overrated but definitely more than a good player.
