Carson's situation is a pretty good case of how capitalism skews realistic perspective. For reasons that have little to do with intelligence per se, surgical jobs have high income, higher than say the top minds in actual medical research. Because of this it's usually assumed even by liberals that they're somehow exceptionally bright.

You are suggesting there was some calculated thought on his part. I'm not willing to go so far as that. I think it was a stupid thought that popped in to his head, maybe not today but kept in mind as a possible show of deep intellect whenever it surfaced again (today). I don't think he much cares if it's controversial. If his words wind up being so I think it truly confounds him. I believe he thinks he makes perfect sense, that we don't get it proves to him his intelligence is such that it is far beyond average people's comprehension. And yes, it's missed on him that by that logic it could just mean that he is incomprehensible.
