The opinion that an American citizen should be disqualified from becoming President due to their religious choice is a very strange opinion (kooky), since religion is not part of the requirements for being President.
Since being (or not) a specific religion is not a requirement, disqualifying someone for it is akin to disqualification based on gender, color or socio-economic status.
Since some part of the Federal government would be tasked with disqualification, that would amount to discrimination based on factors that are illegal.

No, apparently he referred to America as "a nation of immigrants". I'd say the wording he used was technically incorrect, though funnily enough everyone knew what he meant, ie. referring to the heritage of almost all modern-day Americans, and the rest of what he said makes sense with that. Ben Carson on the other hand just piled one idiotic and incorrect statement on top of another.
And perhaps, like some of you, these new arrivals might have had some moments of doubt, wondering if they had made a mistake in leaving everything and everyone they ever knew behind. So life in America was not always easy. It wasn’t always easy for new immigrants. Certainly it wasn’t easy for those of African heritage who had not come here voluntarily, and yet in their own way were immigrants themselves. There was discrimination and hardship and poverty. But, like you, they no doubt found inspiration in all those who had come before them. And they were able to muster faith that, here in America, they might build a better life and give their children something more.

I don't like what Carson said. Or that people acting like slavery isn't still a real thing in the world, and even in America. Slavery still very much exists in America today, and is far from all black.

Public official? Proposing policy? Retired surgeons are not public officials, neither are presidential candidates. At least I'm pretty sure they aren't.
