Ben-Hur, one of the greatest movies of all time??

I say HELL YEAH!! Has to be the greatest epic EVER!!! I still have to sit down and watch it all the way through whenever I see it. And the chariot scene is the best!!!

What are your thoughts??

I was getting a birthday gift for a friend of mine at Best Buy, and they have Ben-Hur on DVD for $14.99. I was kinda short on cash so I didn't get it

The filming of the chariot race was one of the most ambitious undertakings of it's time. Spectacular! In my opinion, it still ranks as one of the greatest action sequences in motion picture history.

Lawrence of Arabia is in the same vein. Movies like gladiator are great, but they certainly lack some of that old magic

I'm assuming you're speaking of the 1959 Charlton Heston version? There was an older silent version...I forget who played in it though. Early 1920s, as I recall...

NSF4 - you should try to see EL Cid, also with Charlton Heston.

For those that do not know - Ben Hur still holds the tilte of most Oscar awards ( 11, now shared with Titanic(groan))

$1.55 a gallon? Try $1.89 over here, and that's for cheap gas. Probably going to break $2.00 in the next month or two.

At $14.99 maybe I will go pick up Ben-Hur. Fry's had Sniper for $12.99, was planning on getting that too. Would make for a great Saturday night movie doubleheader: chariots and snipers, woohoo!

Awesome film!

The DVD is great too--I've never seen Ben Hur look so good. It's SUPER-Wide though... the black bars are especially prominent.

The only problem is that the movie is so long it's a flipper! Kind of cool though, the DVD is dual-sided and dual-layer on both sides.

I think the big difference for me was that in films such as Gladiator your knew it was CGI, Where as in Ben Hur the sets are just insane and to go to that depth to make a good picture shows more professionalism as a film maker.

One side of a RSDL DVD is not large enough to hold this film (as it was compressed).

Old flippers were single layer... even with dual-layer technology one side is still not enough for this movie.

It's not that big of a deal. The movie's so long you need a pee/popcorn break anyway.

Ben Hur is one of those movies that you want to watch a lot of clips of, but not the whole thing at once... classic, absurd, with fantastic cinematography

Just bought the DVD and watched it around easter time. Great epic movie in every sense of the word. The chariot race and sea battle were great. RAMMING SPEED!

I want to get Lawrence of Arabia on DVD - just came out a few weeks ago.
