jesus, that's crazy.

I bet that house arrest is seeming like a good idea to her right about now

That's sad. Pakistan is really messed up. I don't think an islamic country can sustain a true democracy, I really don't.

This has got ISI written all over it.

And of course, our friendly puppet-general ally Musharraf has not one drop of blood on his hands (rolling eyes)

It will be interesting to get The Green Bean's take on this.

Why bring Islam in this? Marcos in Philippines also had Aquino killed in the 80's. This kind of stuff happens all the time in countries with dictatorship, many of which are not Islamic country.

Just goes to show you how suck fscks who don't care about human life behave...

They need to start killing the entire families of these suicide bombers or something since they obviously don't care about their own or anyone elses...

Islam cannot have a democracy in a 3rd world shithole country like anywhere in the Middle East. They would have to outlaw the practice of fundamentalism and adopt a more 21st, 20th, 19th, hell even 15th century religion.

AP is reporting that she was shot in the neck and chest, then the shooter blew himself up along with 14-20 people.

Considering they are in charge of her security, or at least Musharraf's people are I would say they are very culpable.

But hey only $5 billion of the money we've given to Pakistan in the last 5 years is unaccounted for.

I'm sure it's been invested in a freedom fund somewhere.

I'm fairly certain any candidate the US supports will face similar fates.

I for sure would not plan to be a candidate there... even if I was a shoo-in.

In some ways it may be a double dose of bad news for Musharraf. He was hoping for a power sharing deal with Bhutto and now thats no longer possible. But the Bhutto constituency must now search for a new leader and that creates more uncertainty and a potential for violence.

And I see we have some wondering already about possible Government complicity. And even if there is no evidence, enough people may believe so it defaults to the same thing.

What's that old Chinese curse? Something about living in changing times. We can only wait to see how this plays out. And hope cooler heads prevail. But historically speaking, the assassination of a political leader often has disastrous long term consequences.

Islamic radicals have been calling for her death for a long time.

A woman in charge of a government in the Islamic world? No way they would stand for something like that.

I would not be surprised if Pakistan has a civil war in the next few years, or at least an extend time of extreme radical bombings etc.

This was bound to happen and is sure to kick up a shit storm there. If Musharraf had any brains he would have had her under heavy 24/7 protection, despite the fact that she was his opposition. Because, in the end, the only ones to gain from this will be the extremist fundamentalist elements. They thrive on shit like this.

This almost seemed inevitable in a way. Surely she wouldn't have placed that much faith in her security detail (who's to say it wasn't compromised?). I don't know...to me, coming home from exile under those circumstances seemed like almost certain death/martyrhood.

QFT.

Hilarious that people would expect a 'religion' which punishes the raped, rather than the raper, to accept a woman in a position of power or authority. Not gonna happen.

Let's hope we've got our hands on (their) nukes first.

Pakistan has long supported the Taliban. Whether it was Taliban or other Islamic fascists who did this, Pakistan, as ProfJohn says is likely facing major internal strife over the next few years.

ISI may very well have had a hand in this or at least turned their head at a critical time in this assasination. ISI created the Taliban and ISI is a major reason why Afgahanistan continues to have problems with them. Bhutto being female may or may not have had a lot to do with this as there was an attempt on Sharif's life as well earlier.

Looks like it's time for Musharaff to call for marshal law and call off the elections.

She has been in charge twice already.

From CNN
Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated Thursday in Rawalpindi, was the first female prime minister of Pakistan and of any Islamic nation. She led Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996.
