bench testing a mobo & cpu

just rec;d a used NF7-S v2 mobo + AMD 2500 mobile CPU.

wanted to test it before installing in the case.

hooked up ATX power, 4-pronged power cable(whatever it's called), put in a ram chip, hooked up the power cable, reset cable, & speaker cables only. And, put in an ATI 9600 card in the AGP slot.

I'm getting a 2 toned alarm sound from the speaker. do I need a HD attached? if so, does it have to have an OS? i have one sitting around I can hook up but don't want to until i'm ready to fully install.

it's late... what did i overlook?

might wanna reset the bios if you haven't already...

otherwise, look for the online manual for your mobo and learn the beep codes to see what it's telling you

beeps mean that it's not posting (you don't need HD for it to post). check that your memory is compatible as this is the most common cause for this problem

Make sure the heatsink and fan are properly attached and seated also.

Make sure the cpu fan is connected to the cpu header on the mobo and maybe connect a keyboard to it too.

i didn't connect a HSF yet thinking that it would post w/o it, maybe not.

MB needs to receive an acceptable rpm signal from the cpu fan or it will shut down to keep from frying the cpu. You can fry a cpu pretty fast without a hsf.

Yeah, it will more than likely burn up your CPU..you do realize that CPU's get very very hot..why do you think they need such a big metal block to sit on top of them...A-XP's don't have thermal protection either, so if you powered it up, there is a really good chance you fried your CPU..
