Hello, i am trying to test benchmarks out with the new GTX 1060. It does not seem to be performing the way i would expect. So i am thinking maybe the CPU is throttling it. What is a good way to test this? As an example when running the Valley Bench on Extreme HD i came up with a 2670 score. That seems low. Unfortunately i do not have another desktop to test the card. The CPU this rig has is a i3-4130.

Yes your i3 is probably a bottleneck, overclock it if it isn't already. You can test in something like 3dMark which has separate CPU and GPU scores.

Best bet though is trying it in games. Some games are CPU heavy, others aren't. You can check GPU usage with afterburner or similar software, if it isn't at or near 100% while gaming, then you are definitely CPU bound, and if your FPS isn't as high as you want but GPU is 100%, you might still be CPU bound but it could be memory or other things as well preventing it from running as fast as possible.

So was monitoring in hwmoniitor. GPU was 99% usage and cpu usage maxed around 75% on all cores. That would mean its not cpu limiting right?

Well the CPU isn't holding back the GPU, but that doesn't mean the CPU isn't limiting the game itself. Try overclocking and see if the FPS goes up. The GPU is being fed, but there is still CPU time required for each frame. The reason the CPU won't hit 100% is because it's probably not using all cores. But even having a few cores maxed @ 100% can still be CPU limited just due to how long it takes it to create each frame (say 5ms vs 10ms CPU time).

With that CPU, probably slower memory as well, maybe a weaker mobo to top it all off, that is a realistic number. Most benches on the web are with the best possible setups, that means 16GB of high speed, high quality DDR4 memory, the best mobo's in the field and bare operating system with no additional programs and apps to slow it down.

So when looking at the scores on websites apply a 5% to 15% reduction to those scores depending on the hardware you have.
