Is it because of the way program is written (software), the way graphics cards works (hardware), or something else? I have been curious about it now that GPUs can do both single/double-precisions.
nearly all graphics card conversion happens using a particular specialized hardware block on the card, rather than using cuda/opencl to use the more general parts of the GPU. i'd say that makes it a hardware issue. with a graphics card you're basically trading quality/file size for speed.

http://www.techspot.com/article/1131-hevc-h256-enconding-playback/page7.html

would be interesting to see if a cuda or opencl build of handbrake could be done and if that affects the resulting file in terms of quality and bit rate.

Well done avx2 performance on a 320 usd processor on a 90usd asus b350m mb, using the cheapest brand 2*8 ram i could get (corsair lpx 3000). Edge out oc 6850. Pretty impressive stuff.
Thats really nice. I'm building my internal hype for the Ryzen 5 series to see what the 4 & 6 core Rs can do.

I remember your post from the Ryzen CPU cooler thread .

I know it's not really a fair comparison, but interesting to see anyway.

If I had better physical access to my case, I'd rip out two sticks of ram and run it in dual channel for a run.

I reran some tests in single channel mode.

So even going down to one stick in single channel only added a couple seconds. Does this version of Handbrake use AVX 2 instructions? Why would Haswell be faster than Ryzen?

Thanx for mem test. So dual channel same perf as quad as i can tell?

Yes H265 encoding uses avx2 in this version
Thats why a bwe 6850 oc is more or less 1700 oc speed

Yeah, I ran full overclock at dual channel and it was ~0.4 seconds slower than quad, so within the margin of error.
