I'm pretty surprised my laptop outperformed my desktop in this test while using less than half the power.

But your desktop is using Windows and your note is using OSX, I can only guess the Windows version of handbreak needs seems code tweaking?

So everyone has some new systems...here are mine, with a 2.33GHz E5410 Running Slackware (8 real cores, 16GB quad channel EEC FB-DIMM DDR2-666)

Code:
Encoding: task 1 of 1, 99.75 % (264.37 fps, avg 262.39 fps, ETA 00h00m00s)[14:07:21] reader: done. 1 scr changes
[14:07:21] work: average encoding speed for job is 262.393829 fps

So 262fps, not bad for a 5+ year old system.

Look at the chart, and notice Soulkeeper's FPS with an AMD A8 @ 3.3GHz under Linux, it is outperforming a i7-4770K @ 4.5GHz on Windows!

I'd like Soulkeeper to confirm what settings he used as I and others are not getting any where near that speedup in Linux.

On my C2Q Linux box I get 122 fps with a Q9300 @ 3.33 Ghz running Ubuntu with the latest stable kernel.

Same machine on Win7 I get 111.8 fps. So, basically a 9% speedup on Linux. On an earlier kernel (3.2.48) I got 119fps or ~7% speedup.

Your results are invalid because your command is not setting the correct preset for the benchmark.
Code:
┌[nicholas@skynet]-[~/Downloads]
└╼ HandBrakeCLI --preset-list | grep Android
HandBrake svn5618 (2013062901) - Linux x86_64 - http://handbrake.fr
   + Android: -e x264 -q 22.0 -r 30 --pfr -a 1 -E faac -B 128 -6 dpl2 -R Auto -D 0.0 --audio-copy-mask aac,ac3,dtshd,dts,mp3 --audio-fallback ffac3 -f mp4 -X 720 -Y 576 --loose-anamorphic --modulus 2 --x264-preset medium --h264-profile main --h264-level 3.0
   + Android Tablet: -e x264 -q 22.0 -r 30 --pfr -a 1 -E faac -B 128 -6 dpl2 -R Auto -D 0.0 --audio-copy-mask aac,ac3,dtshd,dts,mp3 --audio-fallback ffac3 -f mp4 -X 1280 -Y 720 --loose-anamorphic --modulus 2 --x264-preset medium --h264-profile main --h264-level 3.1
As you can see the only options are "Android" and "Android tablet". If we tweak your command a bit like the following:
Code:
HandBrakeCLI --preset="Android" -i big_buck_bunny_480p_h264.mov -o big_buck_bunny_480p_h264.mp4 -v
The result would in line with the others.

Yeah, I saw that as I scrolled up - a few posts had changed.

Ahh well

I was hoping to find some quick sync support or opencl in there too :\

Stricken his name from the records!!!!

There's a quick sync version on the downloads page. Not sure how well it works. I tried the opencl version and got about a ~12-13% speed-up in Windows, just barely faster than cpu only in linux. Right now the gpu is only used for cropping and resizing if I remember right from the release notes, so if you're doing a much bigger size (e.g. 1080p) down to the android pre-set, you'd probably see a bigger increase from using the gpu. You should give the quick sync one a try and see how it does.
