<< Most cable modem co's that charged $35 a month for 1+mb down and 256 up, were LOSING money, a lot of money, because bandwidth is expensive. I agree with it. They are doing it so they can become profitable, broadband won't take off until its profitable. Honestly if you want unlimited bandwidth, the avg price for a company to actually make a profit off of you is $150 a month. >>

This is same BS phone companies were crying when competition forced them to drop from usual 25c/min to whatever they charge now. And guess what, the cost of putting your long distance call thru is 2c/min.
How come in countries so behind us in free enterprise like Korea or Hong Kong, can charge less for 1.5mb connection than we pay for 384k. That's not because they have cheaper laborers carrying e-mails along the information highway. That's because they have less goverment intrusions and guarantees given by bribetakers in congress, protecting our poor media empires. I'm on RR now, but I'm planning to go DSL way soon.

CZroe, your correct they were promoting the idea of streaming movie rentals but think about it how many movies would somebody order i.e. pay for in any given week, 1 or 2 maybe? That's no where near the bandwidth hog of somebody queuing up 10 movies on Kazaa while uploading anothor 700mb movie. They had one way of guessing "download once and share with the world" would become so popular.

From where I sit, I see any such action as not only good business but a great idea. It would do a lot to reduce congestion and get rid of freeloaders. It's got my vote!

Maybe they should go by peak usage times like the Electric utility does. If you use your bandwidth in the wee hours of the morning, it shouldnt affect the majority of users who only surf in the evening.

The media giants have these politicians so deep into their pockets it's utterly ridicules at this point. I?ve always wondered when I first stated working at my State job how does a politician which only makes $50k a year, manage to afford a home that?s assess (home/land) at a million dollars+? I once met a (prominent) businessman who said he was going to become a politician because he was tried of taking scraps. It?s pretty obvious what he was taking about.

I'm glad my ADSL provider has not don this, and doesn't plan to. It's stated on there website, but who knows, money talks and BS walks.

<< I mean - how much is it worth to be able to leach pr0n and MP3s and geek TV shows anytime you want? Its worth a lot more than $39/month IMO. >>

Thats all you've mentioned in your posts, is that all you know, or is it the only thing you use your cable connection for? How about the streaming content available on most news sites, even the ISP homepages? Porn is OK, if thats what you like, enjoy the freedom, and don't feel guilty about being human.

And if cable companies want to gamble away thier strong position in the market, by raping customers, it will be goodbye cable and hello DSL!

no - I dont consume porn and I dont gank TV shows or music.

I surf, occasionally download drivers and demos and I play games - playing games takes maybe 2-4 kilobytes per second of bandwidth - a drop in the ocean - but all the file hogs bog the networks and ruin the gaming experience.

If they would implement a packet priority scheme, I would not bitch so much - you will not even notice a 300ms delay on your porn packet - but it is an eternity for gamers.

Excellent idea sir. If they do have to move to a new system, this should be it.

News like this will cause many people to go on Major Downloading Sprees before TW puts on the brakes.

Hrm... with that news I should start counting the weeks until Time Warner announces their "pay per view movies on demand" and divx enabled website of content.

Afterall, they have a big powerful monopoly like M$ to model.
