I'm looking to get a new monitor and I'm trying to clear a few things up. My biggest decision is whether or not a 120hz monitor is going to offer any noticeable benefits for all the gaming I do.

I'm not interested in 3D though. I have a Radeon 5970 on a sort of 'permanent test drive' from a friend which Im not at liberty to sell or trade in.

Other than the question of hertz, I'm looking for the largest monitor I can squeeze in 24.5 inches of width of my desk, preferably with an LED backlight. My budget is about $350-$400 and Id like to buy at a MicroCenter if possible.

Any ideas?

In my experience 120hz has definitely been worth it. The instant I switched it to 120hz I could tell the difference even on the desktop, noticeably smoother. If you are running games in excess of 100fps then you will notice the difference as you are half as likely to encounter tearing. All currently available 120hz monitors are TN panels and the ones you should look at would be the 23.6" 1920x1080 options. I can vouch for the Alienware as a great monitor, the Asus has been getting good reviews recently and I think LG have recently released one aswell.

I hate tearing so much. So I'm looking to get a 23-24 inch 120hz monitor. I don't want 3d. I just want the improved experience. I was looking at the ASUS one or the Samsung. I'm hoping something bigger will be out by Feb but if not, I'll go with one of those.

I've heard one supposed benefit of the 120 monitors is reduced eyestrain. Can anybody confirm this? I mostly play with my lights on but do play at night in the dark as well.

with vsync off you can still get tearing even on a 120hz monitor.

I can honestly say switching from a little bit laggy 60hz monitor to a lag free 120hz monitor had much more impact on my aim in fast paced fps then any of the fancy mice or other junk I've bought over the years. Significantly more then I expected.

Same, helps my craving for the ol' CRT a bit. I can't believe there haven't been speedy LCD's like this sooner than when they were released. There's no going back to 60Hz for FPS games.

Don't bother with the Samsung.

I'd have to be pushing 120+ framerates though right? I figure any game I'm doing that I need to crank up some of the AA.
the higher the framerate, the more tearing is likely to occur but you can get tearing at any framerate. every game is different and some may tear like crazy at 20 fps while another game is just fine at 200fps. really just firing a weapon or having flickering lights can make the screen have severe tearing in some games.

If only there was a 27" 120Hz PC LED LCD 2560res, one can only hope! Cuz I aint downgrading resolution to 1920x1200res that is too big for me,, I need smaller and realestate for my DAW,,, the day a 2560res 120hz 2ms response comes out Ill jump on it...
