AHL minimum is $41,500 this season. The NFL practice squad is definitely a nice check, but odds are you have a better shot to go from the AHL to the NHL than NFL practice squad to the 53 man roster. Once at the NHL level, the ELC minimum is 925k. NFL is 420k.

I'd say the NHL equivalent of a practice squad is their ECHL affiliate. Pretty sure those guys are playing for a sandwich and a six pack, too.

Depends on whose practice squad you're on. If you're a D Linemen or an LB on the Cowboys practice squad, you're almost a sure thing to get called up at some point.

I am sure there are. They have to pay that much though, because you are a member of the team every day except Sunday (or Thursday / Monday night). You suit up, you practice, you drill, you work out, etc. You just don't play.

The sad part is practice squad players make more than some MLS starters and those called up could make more than all but designated players. (league minimum for MLS is around $80k a year and maximum for all but your 2 designated players is like $325k)

There was an article on a practice squad guy either earlier this week or last week. They have to know both offense, defense and special teams. At practice, they play every position. Half their checks go to hotels/food too.

Since that's exactly what the sentence says, yes.

Pretty nice move by the Bengals.

Also, $6k a week to be on a practice squad isn't half bad. That is a lot more money than what guys in the American Hockey League (AHL) get paid, and those guys are basically the practice squad of the NHL team they play for.

I had looked it up for a different reason last month, but women's professional softball players make $5,000-$8,000 per year (about 3 months in a season). WNBA is like $72K on average.

$6K/week isn't bad at all if you're smart with your money.

You think softball players have it bad? I read an article about women's volleyball awhile back and a top player (can't remember who, as it was years ago) said that, basically, if you aren't winning big tournaments, you make zero money. There aren't sponsorship deals or weekly checks. There is win or starve. Talk about rough!

Half their checks still leave them with a ton of money left over, $50+ a year, kind of money. And, I find it hard to believe a practice squad player is spending $3,000 a month in hotels and food. Wait, no, actually, I don't find that hard to believe. Most people are idiots with their money.

3k/mo on just rent/hotels would be easy in CA.. probably not in Ohio. But yes, many are idiots with their money.

Thats pretty good money. I wonder if there are career practice squad players.

I think there's, in general, a 2 yr limit to be on a practice squad. So, no, not really.

I think you need to rethink this one. I spend half what I make feeding and providing shelter for my family don't you ?

why couldn't he just start a gofundme site, like everyone else?
Go eat a waffle

Have plenty of other views I won't go into, but that one lept to mind.

I'll stay out of the pay of people playing a game for show argument in general.

he got bumped back to active squad today, and there's more:

Well, this week, Still was promoted back to the Bengals' active roster. And what's more, the Bengals announced they will donate proceeds from Still's jersey sales to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati and pediatric cancer care and research.

The No. 75 jersey quickly became the team's top seller -- selling more on Tuesday than any other Bengals' player in history.

New Orleans head coach Sean Payton bought 100 of them himself. The sales have already brought in more than $100,000.

They stole IHateMyJob2004's idea! LOL. That's pretty awesome and Payton's gesture was nice too.

There is good news!

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...innati-bengals-surgery-remove-cancerous-tumor

From a different news story.
n a season full of bad stories, one of the best has come in Cincinnati, where defensive lineman Devon Still’s four-year-old daughter has had a tumor completely removed.

Via Coley Harvey of ESPN.com, Leah Still endured a six-hour procedure on Thursday, which resulted in the removal of all cancer.

She’ll still undergo another round of chemotherapy, radiation, and stem-cell transplants. So while the fight isn’t over, a major battle has been won.

In a video posted on Instagram, Still gives Leah a pep talk before heading in to the hospital.

“I’m going to ask you again,” Still said to his daughter. “I’m ready for today. Are you ready for today? You ready to get this cancer up out you?”

She smiled through it all. And Devon Still and his family have reason to smile tonight.

Along the way, nearly 10,000 Devon Still jerseys have been sold, raising $1 million for the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s pediatric cancer research efforts. Saints coach Sean Payton personally purchased 100 of the jerseys.

If I buy a Jersey can I use the cost as a tax deduction?

When all this is over, they should let Still play in atleast one pro game.

When all this is over, they should let Still play in atleast one pro game.

Two weeks ago, he was activated off the practice squad and played in place of injured tackle Brandon Thompson.

Still has five tackles through two games.

The instagram video is awesome also. The day before the surgery he rented out a movie theater for a party for his daughter.

I bought the jersey just to add to my collection of pro jerseys. He has already been activated and is playing.
