Best day ever.

The Benq 1640 finally shows up in the US and giganews ups their unlimited account concurrent connections from 4 to 10!

Thanks for the heads up, I was about to order from ncix.com yesterday but held off on it.

By the way, this drive is supposedly so good that even plextor is rebadging them.

I just recently picked up the 1620 and its total crap. I returned to newegg got another again total crap. RMA'd direct to benq hoping I would get a more up to date one and it is total crap too. I dont' care what they say over at cdfreaks. I'll never purchase a benq again.

This is the drive that edged out the NEC 3540A

better compatibility with a wider varity of disc brands and formats as well as less errors, pretty much across the board, and one of the faster drives on top of all that. However I wonder if firmware updates have made the 3540 any better...I already have the 3520A and was going to grab the 40 for my other computer but decided to wait for this BenQ based on the AT review.

We were really dissapointed in the NEC ND-3540A's performance when compared to drives like the BenQ DW1640, but hopefully their performance will improve as their BIOS matures.

The only drive we saw that could write to the majority of discs and quickly at that was BenQ's DW1640. It had average performance on most of the benchmarks. but always had a successful read to go with the successful write. The only disc that it could not write to was the MKM A03 8x DVD+RW.

Besides that single issue, the DW1640 has features to aid in successful writes, as well as bitsetting features to allow greater compatibility of the media to which it writes. The bitsetting utility can be downloaded from BenQ's website. Over these 6 DVDR units, we recommend the BenQ DW1640 for its performance and reliability in writing to various types of media. Expect this drive to start showing up on retail store shelves very soon.

I'm pretty tempted to go ahead and grab one...

yes, infact they are night and day. the laser's, chipsets, controllers, electronics, even the drive motor and servo's are different. they aren't even built in the same plant. the 620 came from ROC-Taiwan and the 640 comes from China.

man you have all the bad luck.

I have 2 1620 Pros and neither has had a single issue. Quiet, been to many a lan, so they have been bumped around a good it, and they run without fail. Burned about 130 DVD's and 50+ CDs between the 2 of them with no problems

They didn't get to be so popular by being a bad drive. Mine is fantastic. Most likely it comes down to the media you are using. The 1620 prefers + media, and Taiyo Yuden's at that. Truly excellent burns.

All burners were not created equal. Do research on what works best with what.

taiyo yuden work well in most drives, dont they? my expressions of this drive with stock fw. i like the PIE/PIF scanning, they do well with my Sony taiyo yuden but only burn at 8x.. my burner before burn it at 16x with stock fw and perfect scan too. cant' wait for that Solid Burn feature in next firmware and maybe they'll have overspeeding media.

Sure. TY's are good overall.

Mine burn at up to 16x (T02's), though I burn at 12. 16x have quite a bit more errors, so not worth a few less seconds.

Use firmware B7P9 (or OEM equiv.) or higher. Then get the MediaCodeSpeedEdit (MCSE) tool from cdfreaks and set the speed of your media to 16x. Should work fine for you.

I think now that you are referring to the 1640. If so, please disregard. Heh

I'm thinking of getting the Benq dw1640. Everyone (Ncix, Dangeo, etc) has OEM versions only. What is missing from the OEM package and
is it worth buying retail?

Missing? Not much. However. The retail drive has a 2 year warranty while OEM only 1 year. This could be significant.

My retail came with software disk (Nero, etc.) and 2 screws. Oh...and a pretty box. Heh

If you didn't see, Micro Center is selling the retail version in-store (where I bought mine) for only $40 right now.

Thanks - the retail sounds like the way to go - now if someone in Canada will stock the retail version I'll be all set!
