So, my new kitten can go diaf. While cleaning up a mess she just made and leaving her unsupervised for about 30 seconds, she did something to my computer. I don't know exactly what, but the only evidence of tampering to be found was an unplugged power cord to my monitor. The problem is that after plugging it back in, its max resolution is now 1024x768 and I'm stumped as to why.

Oddly enough there are two events under the device manager > monitors > generic Non-PnP Monitor that correspond with the timing of the power cord being ripped out / plugged back in:

1. Driver service added (monitor)
Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service monitor for Device Instance ID DISPLAY\DEFAULT_MONITOR\5&2A1DEA1F&0&UID2097424 with the following status: 0.
2. Device installed (monitor.inf)
Driver Management concluded the process to install driver monitor.inf_amd64_a14e372d8a0bba60\monitor.inf for Device Instance ID DISPLAY\DEFAULT_MONITOR\5&2A1DEA1F&0&UID2097424 with the following status: 0x0.

For some reason, when I turn the power to the monitor on from an off state, I get the two-tone windows "device disconnected" sound. This happens every time now and has never happened before. I'm running Win8 build 8250 and my GPU is a GTX 560 Ti. I've never heard of a problem like this before and really can't believe this is happening from a power cord coming unplugged...

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

I have Windows Vista, which I guess I could go back to, but I would consider that a last resort. The only driver specific to this monitor I can find online is an older one with only Win XP listed as supported. It's currently using the same generic Win 8 driver for a non-PnP monitor it has since installing 8250 3 months ago. As far as the connection goes, I use DVI, though I might be able to root around in my old stuff for a DVI-to-DSUB converter.

What connector do you use? And got other OS/Driver than that beta?

Don't listen to ShintaiDK, can't you see from his icon, he's part of the feline conspiracy!?

On topic:

Go to device manager.

Delete the display.
Delete the video card.

Reboot.

Let them re-install.
cross fingers.
set proper resolution.

I just deleted the display and video card, and rebooted. Windows reinstalled the generic monitor driver by default and I reinstalled the latest Nvidia driver. No dice.

It seems that the DVI connection on my monitor has crapped out. I don't know why it happened when the cat knocked out the power, but I'm sure it's either the connector on the monitor or the cable. I found an old DSUB cable and my converter and used the DSUB input on the back of my monitor. I'm back to my 1920x1200 resolution again. Thanks everyone for the help! =)
