Bent CPU pins.

Hi guys,

I was trying to change my CPU (1100T) cooler and when I removed it, the processor came out along with it. During the process of getting it unstuck I bent the pins quiet badly(15-20 of them). After a careful surgery of more than an hour I somehow managed to straighten them out (none broke) as much as I could and it slid into the socket quiet easily.

What I'm wondering is are there any symptoms/problems that I have to keep an eye out for due this to determine whether the CPU has been damaged in the process.

Since no pins were broken you shouldn't have any problems. Test it to find out.

This happened to me with an AM2+ Sempron and I wasn't as fortunate as I broke a few of the pins trying to straighten them.

Pull the CPU back out after you put it back in and make sure no other pins got bent putting. Then just get your new cooler on and hope for the best.

The best thing for this is using a plastic id/credit card to straighten them out. This allows for entire rows to be aligned at once.
The retention mechanism itself will tend to straighten them out the rest of the way.

symptoms of a ruined cpu would be similar to any doa or broken cpu (random/varying).

It sounds like you did get them straightened out, so you are likely ok. Good luck

I've never used it, but I've heard some people have used mechanical pencils to straighten the pins out. The kind that have the hollow tube that holds the pencil lead like this:

I've used mechanical pencils and credit cards to fix bent pins. The CPU was still working after.

They are tough little buggers. I once pulled apart a socket 939 that had been running for 3 years only to find that it had been running all that time with 4 bent pins that werent even going into the socket. They must have been GND pins...

I guess in theory the bent pins could be less conductive, ie capable of less current.

That what I used years ago when I bent some pins on my (IIRC) Duron 700.

See if the memory is working OK, showing full amount in CPU-Z. If it doesn't smoke right off the bat then your good to go. If the PCU were damaged, it would show Bsods degradation.

Should be no problems provided all pins lined up and went in each slot. Bent pins on my 955BE too and it was in that little plastic case with the black foam but I think it got squashed somehow during transportation when it was in my suitcase.

Even if some pins break off, it's worth testing it. About half the pins are for power and ground with so much redundancy that it won't matter if some are missing.

For the future, there are techniques that prevent this issue.
First, run the computer for a bit to heat up the thermal compound. I think the heatsink will come off easier if warm.
Next, don't pull up at first. Undo the clip and rotate the heatsink back and forth as much as you can to loosen up that thermal compound. The heatsink may pop off after a few rotations just from this.
After a few back and forth rotations, then try to pull up a little, but not too hard.
Pulling straight up is a recipe for disaster, but I've been there too. Live and learn.

You should have zero problems as long as non are snapped and/or fractured, if they are fractured you'll have no idea and your pc will just bsod.

But thats highly unlikely.
