Hey guys!
I've aqcuired a ton of parts. My work was selling a bunch of old 400Mhz deskpros for $20Cdn a pop so I bought 20. I'm putting together my first real beowulf cluster!!!!
I don't have any video cards in any of the machines except the control node since none came with video(think telnet.) Here are the hardware specs x20
PII400mhz
Compaq Motherboard
10base-t Ethernet
Floppy drive
Cdrom
NO harddrive (company security)
NO videocard (I have no idea why)
So I've isntalled a hard drive and video card on the host node and installed Redhat 5.2 for size. I have set up 19 terminals as dumb with a floppy for network boot
I would love to use this cluster for ECCP (that's 8Ghz-estimating 3.8million per second) BUT when I try to mount the root on hostnode and run the application I can't on each node. I can only get it to run on the host.
I know that the source code is available for it but I haven't looked at it. If it's in FORTRAN it should be possible to use d BERT to convert ECCP as a proper parallel app, correct?
That's something that I'm going to have to look at tomorrow but what I'm hoping is that someone has already done this.
Does anyone know where to get a parrallel version of ECCP?

I'd don't know much about Beowulf setups, but no I don't want to race

Nice find FRed!

I wish I could help you with your question. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Keep us posted.

edit
Is it a bx chipset?
20x600>20x400 isn't it?

You might want to PM Lanman, since he'll be hosting the SETI Beowulf. I would presume he was some knowledge of how the things work.

WOW you got a good deal ! I dont know sqat about about Beowulf clusters. What I have gleaned from the team project thread you need two NIC`s per CPU. They are saying four NIC for a dually. I think you may have a comunication breakdown. Did these come with Floppy drives? You can run Eccp from a linux boot floppy I think, witch would be much easier than Beowulf. I think you can load network drivers from the floppy to transfer DP`s downloading is not needed. BEOWULF is for sure a cool thing but you do not need it to run ECCP. You may want to try searcching for DISKLESS NODES in the DC forum . I think your buddy networkman might know something about it. Man I heard electricity is free in Canada, is that true? If so send me a few boxes CEI is killing me.

YOu do not need two nics for beowulf. Please see this FAQ for some general information. Two may be needed for the beowulf in the thread in question but not for most. Let me make something clear. My beowulf is up and running. I just need a version of ECCP that is capable of running on it. Programs have to be compiled for large scale parallel processing in order to function on a beowulf. I may be able to do it myself once I get around to looking at it (maybe) but I'm just trying to find out if there's a beowulf ready version out there already to save me the trouble...
Thanks for all the comments.

No. We have a great resource in natural hydro in my province and hydro electricity is virtually limitless. Most places in my province have a fixed monthly rate. However, Canada is larger geographically than the United States so it's different all over the country. We have a much more diverse environment from the U.S. and a great portion of the country is frozen wasteland.

I know that. I produce around 400-600 units per day on my various machines. It's just really cool to say that you have a beowulf cluster

BTW there are other advantages of a beowulf over floppy based cracking.
1. Not having to power down 20 systems by hand
2. there are no video cards in 19 of the machines and must be controlled with the controll node - not a lot of choice
3. no mouse or keyboard needed for every node.

SWEET! I got it working. Nothing special I just screwed up big time. It's chunking away right now. I don't have any ethernet going downstairs so I think I'll just let it run for about a week. After that week's up you'll see the biggest dump ever....

COOL Very Cool ! With that you may be the top producer on the whole team. very few individuals could compete with you. I wish I had your resources. Congratulations on a great aquisition. Can you overclock those things?

Oh, there are certainly people who can compete with it if they choose to. I doubt there's much room for overclocking options. They're proprietary OEM boards for commercial systems...

I know it gets cold up there but I doubt you will have to run much heat with that many rigs going. Are you running AC now?

man, I am jealous....
I live in the same state as the Grand Coulee Dam, which provides power to a large portion of the US (well its intermixed with other power sources, but this dam does a lot) but do I benefit? of course not :\
we even had to pay extra because california wanted to buy power from our state so ours was cut back....and we had shortages we wouldnt have otherwise
I would love having a fixed rate

Wow, it's been running for less than 24 hours and already I feel like I need to take a big dump... Maybe I'll run an ethernet cable downstairs tomorrow....every time I try that though the ether all runs out the end from being on such an angle

Congrats on the nice setup, FlorianRed.

BTW, just curious, but how are you running eccp on all of those? Are you using a separate client on each one, or what?

No...that would just be a bunch of computers networked together. I thought it was already kind of explained....Um, scroll up and click on FAQ. It describes in minor detail the basic operation of a beowulf.

Did you modify the client at all for this?
