Mario's La Fiesta on Telegraph Ave is awesome for Mexican Food. Get their carne asada super burrito- it is definitely better than any mexican food i've ever had.

Subs- IB Hoagies & Cheesesteaks on Durant/Telegraph

Pizza- Zaccharies (as already mentioned) followed by Fat Slice or Blondie's

Sandwiches- Cafe Intermezzo- get the chicken salad sandwhich on honey wheat.

lastly, go to Steve's Korean BBQ if you want average quality kalbi in overt quantity.

There's an Ethiopian place on Telegraph that was pretty good, though my info is 12 years old.

Crepes a go-go, mmmmmm, totally forgot about that place. Is Zachary's the one to the south of the college, on a corner? (usually totally packed at night with college students.)
If so, yeah, they have great pizza.

You're referring to the Zachary's on College Ave. - 5801 College Ave. That's in Oakland actually (and two blocks from my house, which partially explains my belly), but may be more convenient for the OP than the one originally listed.

The Great Wall for chinese, stay away from China Village. Its on Kittridge (sp?) near Oxford.
El Taqueria for burritos. Corner of University and Shattuck.
For burgers go to the burger joint on the corner of Shattuck and Hearst. I think its called Oscars.

Blondie's Pizza

And, for years and years, I would go home to S.F. from school in So. Cal. for my birthday, but we would drive all the way to Berkeley to go Fondu Fred for my b-day dinner - a must if you love bread as much as I do.

Damn, I miss Fondu Fred...

Ugh. I can't agree with you there. Fondue Fred is the worst fondue I've ever eaten. Blech. It used to be better, but it went downhill to being just nasty. Haven't been back in a couple years and probably never will go again.

I have not been there in more than 7 years, so I will defer.

Brazil Cafe is actually pretty good. As one other poster said, it looks like a little shack.
Top Dog
Barney's (burger place on Shattuck, north of campus, really good burgers, curly fries, and shakes and smoothies)
Bongo Burger isn't bad

Don't bother with Zachary's. It's one of those places that everyone lists when you ask them what's good in Berkeley, because someone else told them Zachary's when THEY didn't know what was up, and wanted to know where to go in Berkeley. If people would think for themselves they would realize it's not that good.

Please tell me that you are not recommending Blondies or Fat Slice over Zachary's?

no you didn't. I was asking to make sure you didn't have that in mind though.
What pizza place would you recommend?

Don't listen to KingGheedora. Some people don't like Zachary's. The vast majority do like it. Mostly because it is delicious.

Blondie's is fun to stop in once in a while and I ate there several times a week while I was a student, but the pizza doesn't hold a candle to Zach's. When the weather is nice, the beer garden out back at Lanesplitters on San Pablo at University is a good place to pass some time and eat some thin crust pizza while sipping brews. Unfortunately, they no longer have chorizo as a topping.

Top Dog is definitely good for dogs 'n' sausages.
Gordo on College in the Elmwood district has tasty burritos.
