Best 12" car audio sub in the $75~125 range (recommend an amp and box tips while you're at it)

I've been wanted a sub for a long time now. Looking for the best bang for the buck, the closer to $75 the better

Most likely will only go for one, but maybe two if I get greedy. I have the tools and skills to build my own box, but insight into the best box configuration would be helpful. Would it be too much of a volume difference if I built a box meant for two subs side by side but only used one for a while (in anticipation of running two eventually, or if I find out I only really need one)?

This will be going into the trunk, behind/facing the rear seats, of my 92 accord.

Depends on the amp. Infinity/MTX might be your best bets. (I'm no car audio expert though) And when you say a box for 2 subs side by side - do you mean two independent sub boxes attached together, or one sub box with two holes for 2 subs? It defeats the point of a "sealed enclosure" by having the other sub hole empty. Even if you don't cut the hole out for it yet, the cu. ft. inside the box will distort the bass enough so it sounds bad.

bit on ur high side, but http://www.edesignaudio.com 'k' series is an amazing sub from what i have heard for the price. you can get the avionixx 400.2 from there, CALL THEM, and it will be under 400$ shipped. i cant post what the 400.2 is goin for as it is under what they are allowed to list, but its cheap.

and they have box recommendations too, i am putting mine into a 1.0cf sealed enclousre, from what i picture, its gunna be small!

and check my sig lol

Why build a box?
Your trunk will be the largest box possible, and therefore have the highest quality sound.

I said what car it would be going into As far as music...rock, rap, hiphop, classical, country, alternative...pretty much anything so that probably doesn't help.

I was thinking one box...so it would create too much volume is what you're saying (and what I figured).

Subs do have recommended cubic feet for best performance sound. Not all (ok, 99%) don't sound right if you mount them in your rear deck. Same with open air

Yea too much volume. Honestly if the amp isn't a real high quality one you might as well push 2 cheaper 12's from BB/CC (they run specials all the time) for like $99-$129 for both. You should have either all high/mid/low quality components. It defies the point of mixing and matching different quality components

Really?
Well, I generally agree that 10 times VAS is an infinate baffle, but that 4 time VAS is close enough.
Taking 2 adireaduio 12" bramas, lets check it out.
VAS is 37.2 litres, so for 2 drivers that is 74.4 litres.
10 times 74.4 is 744 litres.
744 litres is 26.25 cubic feet.
So, 26.25 cubic feet or larger will give you an IB.
Now a box that large is a going to use all your trunk space, so just use the trunk as the enclosure.

Now, I have loudspeaker design software on this PC, and lots of books, like the Loud Speaker Design Cookbook.
So, if you can tell me why I am an idiot, I bet I can figure it out.
now, it is your turn to explain what you ment.

Actually, all drivers reach their ideal performance with an infinate sized enclosure.

Find me a sub that has more low end extention and flatter response in a box sized less than 4 times the driver's rated VAS.
We will take the T/S parameters and use some modeling software to check it out.

If you like tight bass, I'd go with 2 GOOD 8" subwoofers.

If you want everyone within a mile radius to know your car is coming, I'd go with a couple of 15s.

Glen, I'll take your challenge.

Lemme go get my modelling software (Just got a new PC at work and havent installed it yet)

And Loudspeaker Design Cookbook is an EXCELLENT book, highly recommended reading for anyone interested in car audio. (Yes, I have it too)

Without a box, how would you mount the sub?

15" Brahma.
6.5 ft^3 ported tuned to 22 hertz. -3.183db @ 19.04 hertz. Never above +1.15db anywhere, so its safe to say ruler flat response IMO.

Your turn.

MDF baffle. Attach to floor and rear deck. One reason I freaking hate not using boxes, too much of a PITA.
