I don't want to bother with a fan controller, these are supposed to ramp up when things get hot and quiet down when the system idles.

Your linked fan is for case exhaust *only*. Read the overclockers.com review within your link. The thermistor can be solder jumped but then the fan *must* be put on a controller.

If this type of fan interest you, go to www.bgmicro.com>fans. Look for the NMB Smart fan for $4. I have not bought any of these yet, but would if I needed 100cfm 120s. NMB is a very high quality fan.

Because of the temperature controlled fan speed. At times the fan may spin down to extremely low speeds, because the air around the fan itself is not really that hot, but the heatsink you are trying to cool IS hot.

Again, you can short the probe to get full speed all the time, but then it would be LOUD, thus the need for a normal fan speed controler.

My vote goes for the 120mmx38mm Sanyo Denki's. They push 103cfm@39db and are virtually silent on a fan controller yet still push some good cfm. They are very high quality too.
