no one is prob answering because most have flat panels or 19"+ monitors. Anyway you can't go wrong with any of the newer Viewsonic CRT's.

I have a LG Flatron F700B which I like. Nice 0.24 stripe pitch. Both the LG Flatron F700P and Philips 107P are pretty good. The Samsungs 765MB seems like a good choice too.

Cheers

if you are going to get a CRT, the ONLY one to get is an IBM P275, and it has to be black too..

there is noway any res beyond 1600x1200 would be useable on a 17.. just marketing fluff

You are very wrong there, I use above that every day. 1920x1440 on a 17" is perfectly readable, just most 17" can't do it at a non-painful refresh.

Wow, $139 from a decent retailer for that monitor; I have the 753DF at home and it's great. Very... tempted... to... order.

After a bit of research i found the following to be the best 17 inchers.

Samsung SM753DFX
Samsung SyncMaster 700NF 17" CRT Monitor (More expensive)

Sony CPD-G220R/L 17" CRT Monitor
Sony CPD-G220S 17" CRT Monitor (More expensive)

Viewsonic P75f+ (White)

Anyone with one of these? which would you get...

I have the 753DF; I've never heard of the 753DFX, but considering the 755DF was almost like the 753DF, I would assume the X is virtually identical. That said, the 753 is a very nice monitor, it's very sharp, and good colors, but it's a bit weak resolution wise; you have to stick with 1024x768 or less if you want to stay at 85hz, the next whole resolution drops to the 60hz range. That said, the newer Samsungs(the 757MB for example) will probably be better monitors because they're newer.

Mitsubishi Dimond Pro 750SB is one of the best. Incredibly clear, sharp and just generaly incredible.

That gets my vote. Most people vote for sony's without trying anything else. Sony's trinitron range are OK but they arnt the creme de le creme.

I really love my Envision FlatCRT 770-e monitor. It was ~$90 after rebates and it amazingly clear for such a cheap price. It uses an LG picture tube and displays my DVD;s great. It's an awesome monitor for the price, unfortunately it can only do 1280x1024 @ 60hz, then 1024x768 @ 85hz. If you want to use 1280x1024, get the 780-e: 1280x1024 @ 85hz.

and you use a microscope to read the text, right...
I have I believe the top of the line 21" IBM/sony trinitron monitor, and i can use 1920x1440 if i need the extra realestate for intense coding or graphix work, but for normal use its to hard to read the text comfortably, unless you like being 10" away from the monitor at all times. I cant imagine how awful that would be on a smaller CRT..

If you are that hard pressed for extra res.. you should invest in a larger monitor or a 2nd monitor.

I have a Samsung 700NF. I did research before I bought mine, and came to the conclusion this was the best to get. Although I am happy with it, I do want to let you know a couple of things first:

1. My monitor has some geometry distortion problems. Not sure if all 700nfs do, but mine does.
2.For some reason I have a 'new' version of the 700NF. (I bought it feb-mar 2002). I do not have a BNC input like all the reviews said. I just have a single attached (non-removable) D-sub (analog) cord (a bummer for me).

Other than these two things this monitor is great. No it is not the best monitor in the world, but since I thought it was going to be when I bought it, I was let down.

On the plus this monitor has the most vibrant colors of any monitor I have ever seen

BTW: The text on this monitor could be better...I have a ti4400 right now, but before that I used a Radeon 7500. The problems are not from the videocard.
