Right now I am torn between the Samsung 171b, 171p and 170t. Are these good? which is best, and are there any better ones? price range is around 800 bucks, and i'd like to keep it there. thanks.

How is the ghosting with the Planar? It seems more reasonably priced than the samsung 171P. Especially with all the coupons for Dell all the time.

For just over $800, you really should look into the 19" Sceptre. It uses the same panel as the Viewsonic VG191 and the new 19" Planar. 25ms Total average response time, 250nits brightness, 500:1 contrast, 170 degree viewing, VGA & DVI.

I have the 18.1" Planar and play games on it frequently. Ghosting is not a problem, you cannot even detect it.

I picked up a 17" philips from staples last week on closeout for $450. Thought it was a bargain, but have yet to try any games on it. Looking at the specs from philips the response times are : trise= 30mS (typ) tfall= 15mS (typ)

Any idea what this means? is my response time going to be 30ms? How bad does that suck for gaiming?

I might let my wife or daughter use this one and I'll go back to my 21"

I belive that you use rise + fall to get the total typ response time.

So... your typical should be 30 + 15 = 45ms

But... I still think that is the most misleading stat out there.

Let us know how it works out.

at least my planar 17.4 is not playable. I can only play on KDS RAD5, but it's 15".

CRT is still better for gaming. It's smoother.

Havnt tried any games on it yet, but im running 3dmark 2001 on it right now

I can see some minor ghosting. on it. I have the refresh set to 75mhz instead of the default 60mhz. Wonder if 60 would give better performance? I doubt it.

My 21 CRT of course doenst have the ghosting, but i think the LCD looks better.

I need to get a DVI cable for it, then Ill be able to hook both the lcd and 21" at the same time to compare more accuratly.

Apex, are you talking about the X9G? Do you have first hand experience with one? Where is one for "just over $800"

I am seriously considering buying a 17-19" LCD in the next month or less. I was really thinking about getting the Samsung 181T. I am open to others though. It must be DVI, 500:1, 25ms, etc...

The more I think about it, I would really rather spend about $700-$800.

The Samsung 240T of course is totaly awesome though, but it is $2500

Yeah, the X9G. Here it is:

http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/scepx9g19tft.html

$869.95 right now

BTW, where did you find the 240T for $2500? I'd love to purchase one. BTW, the 181T has 450:1 contrast under their specifications, but 500:1 under features. Not sure which is right. I don't see the response time though.

I've seen the Viewsonic, which the X9G shares a panel with. It's a nice monitor. I doubt you'd regret the upgrade from the 181T to the X9G. BTW, Samsung now has the 191T, which is more similar to the X9G.

Bah, just realized that the Viewsonic VG191 and VG191B (black) are $799.99 plus shipping now. No reason not to simply go for that.

I've actually seen it for $900!

I'm still considering the 181T from samsung though...

For some reason I can't find it now. It seems to be around $5000 everwhere I look now. When I get home I will look at last nights history.

It's from Compaq. But you need to use the 20% off coupon code to get it. You can find that code at any one of the deals sites out there including mine.

You wouldn't be sorry with one of those... (though I needed PowerStrip to tweak my colors a little)

I just read PC World's review of the monitor...where they said "Its graphics also looked good, but in a comparison with some top-scoring 18-inch models from this month's LCD roundup, the VG191 couldn't compete with the depth and richness of its rivals' colors."
I'm staring at it in my cart right now for $864.88 shipped...
