Best 17" or 19" CRT monitor?

I'm replacing my old 15 inch and will most probably get a 17 inch or 19 inch CRT, which currently are the best 17 inch and 19 inch CRT monitors?

I'm leaning towards a 17" as a 19" seems too bulky but I do have enough space on my desk, so the other question is: 17" or 19"?

This monitor is for my home system, mostly used for gaming, post-processing digital photos and going online.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies. So you guys prefer the NEC/Mitsubishi, what about Viewsonic or Eizo, the latter being so much expensive (locally in Hong Kong) and I wonder what's so special or unique about them.

Any recommendations for the best 17" CRT?

The NEC FP912SB is much better than the FE991SB. The FE991SB is indeed a great monitor, but it isn't nearly as awesome as the FP912SB.
You asked about Viewsonic? Well, some say the P95f+ is great, but then again some on here say it is blurry on the left center of the screen. I would say that the Viewsonic G90fb is the better monitor, and I really enjoyed looking at it.

For 17" screens, I would say Viewsonic's G71fb monitor or Samsung's 765MB are the best. Optionally, Sony's Trinitrons are always very good but they can be impossible to find lately (like when I tried finding an Eizo FlexScan).

What resolution do you usually use with a 17" or a 19" CRT, I'm used to 800x600 on my 15" currently.

I'm asking since I'll look for one that will do at least 85Hz at the resolution that I'm going to use, 75Hz is acceptable but I still see the flickering on my 15".

Also, is it true that Diamondtron tubes are regarded the best, other than Trinitron from Sony?

1280x960 for the 19"
1152x864 for the 17"
try to get one that does 100Hz at these - you'll like it.

About the type of monitor - the best I think are Trinitrons with fixed 0.24 pitch (perhaps Diamondtrons also). I had a 17" Diamondtron with a variable grille pitch (as the first linked Mitsubishi) for a day and I returned it - I wasn't too happy with the text crispyness (is this a word?).

If you want truly rich colors - by all means go with an Aperture Grille monitor (Trinitron and Diamondtron if you're not familiar). The shadow mask monitors (including DynaFlat I think) have crisp text, but not as vivid colors as the AG ones.

As for a concrete monitor it all depends on your location. My criteria would be: Aperture grille, 110KHz for a 19" and 96KHz for the 17", 0.24 grille pitch, nice enclosure design, user-friendly OSD, a black frame would be better for watching movies in the dark. This one fits the above criteria for a 19".

Oh - and above all - try to test-drive the monitor you intend to purchase.. if you buy locally that is. Specs are not everything.

Can't go wrong with a 955DF. Or a high-end Diamondtron like the ones mentioned here. Personally, I like the Diamondtrons better, used them for years. Text clarity was great, really impressed.

If you have $250 to $300 to spend, compare and contrast some Diamondtrons online.

Unfortunately, most of the monitors you guys have mentioned are not available in Hong Kong.
For Samsung, only the 959NF is available rather than 955DF.
NEC/Mitsubishi monitors are very rare in Hong Kong and they seem to have different model names than those listed in the US/European sites, I'll check with the local distributor later to ensure that they are not discontinued products.

Is NEC FP912SB the same monitor as Mitsubishi DP930SB?

Other than the aforementioned 19 inch, I've also checked out Viewsonic P95f+ and Philips 109P40, do both of them has Diamondtron tubes? The 109P40 is capable of 1280*1024 at an astonishing 104Hz! Anybody using the Philips, are they reliable?

Yes, NEC discontinued theirs and Mitsubishi continues it with their Diamond Pro 930.
