hi,

i know there are 1000s of posts already..and i looked at a lot of them...but it didnt help with my decision.

I plan to get a 19" monitor...and i plan to spend about $250 + shipping, something like that.

* I first thought the hitachi 721F(B) would be a nice monitor, but i came along a lot of postings where people complain about the fuzziness on the borders of this monitor. I dont know about this monitor and of course i dont want fuzzy pixels...

* The Samsung 900NF is OUT of my pricerange...so i think about the 955DF !
I heard great things about Samsungs....how good is the 955DF considering that this monitor is not very expensive ?

* I heard people complaining about viewsonic and other brands.....

It doesnt matter to me if the monitor is flat or not btw.

Also, i plan on using 1280x resolution....so the refresh rates at 1600x etc. wont matter.

thanx !!!!

If brightness, contrast, and bright colors are a priority (good for graphic design, photoshopping, gaming and graphics in general) then you want to stick to Aperture Grille monitors (eg. with a Trinitron tube).

If you are doing mostly text work and are willing to sacrifice a bit of color depth and willing to accept a slightly darker picture, then you can go ahead and get a shadow mask monitor, like the Samsung 995F. These are cheaper, but it's a trade off.

Most people don't notice the difference, but when compared side by side it is apparent. Some people with disagree with me, but Consumer Reports magazine will back me up.

Try looking at KDS monitors for good quality/good prices. The AV195-TF is a good 19" for the $300 price range. Good luck.

On paper, the Cornerstone p2460 looks like a good 19" Diamondtron monitor for $289 from monitorsdirect.com (Cornerstone's factory store). 117KHz bandwidth, up to 1856x1392@80Hz. 5 year warranty too.

How about a monitor that does 1600 x 1200 x 75 Hz well?

I would prefer shadow mask. I will be doing light photoshopping but 90% of my time is text.

Flexy: you can't go wrong with the Samsung 955DF, it's a nice monitor. Also check out Cornerstone and Optiquest for buget 19" monitors.

Eug: Depending on what you want to spend, you can find a nice monitor from monitorsdirect.com like a Cornerstone, NEC, Sony, Viewsonic.. etc. I would suggest getting a good shadow mask one if you do alot of text work cause it will be more pleasing to your eyes. Check out a good dot pitch and refresh.

Yeah i have an Optiquest Q95 at work on my desk.

They sell it for $203 + s/h and i think it's a nice monitor for the money - it even got high ratings in PC-magazine now that the Samsung 950p is discontinued. I am thinking about that monitor too, great bargain.

Still collecting input from others just to see what perople think about the other monitors...

thanks !

I got my Dad a AV195-TF and he loves his. Personally, I think my Sony CPD-G400 looks better but it could be that my video card (Gainward GF3) is better than his (can't remember but it was cheap).

I'll throw in another vote for the KDS... I've got the 17" and it's been great. Not a single complaint other than I now want a 19 or 21 inch.

Hi ... I've been also looking around for a 19'' budget monitor and I came upon the KDS XF79p or XF79e which are rather inexpensive perfectly flat shadow mask monitors which have pretty good specs and they don't cost much neither ($370CAN).
I think you should consider this one !

We have three proview 17" monitors in our house and the quality seems to be very good, not on a par with sony's, ect. but good enough for me. Also very inexpensive- $170. at circiut city.

I'd check out http://www.monitorsdirect.com/ and use their comparison guide to compare 19" CRTs in your price range. Cornerstone is a factory direct brand monitor they sell for professional buisness applications and I believe they have 19" monitors under $300 as well as over $400.

I am very pleased with their customer support and monitor performance. I am using their P1460 which has 1600x1200 @ 85hz. 75hz is pretty much a marginal refresh rate in my opinion.

I chose the Cornerstone after seeing how Cnet rated it the best 19" crt including editor's choice. Too bad they don't have them in stores for people to see. It took a high consideration of the Samsung 900NF and Sony G420S before I chose this one.
