I am planning to buy a 19" lcd monitor. But am confused as to which one to buy.
How are the viewsonic ones especially VA1912wb? There is also no recent lcd comparison article on anandtech to refer to.
Please suggest.
Thank you.

I need this lcd for an old PIII system. The max resolution supported by the onboard graphics is 1024x768. will the new lcds work in this resolution?

anyone?

If you have an old PIII system only able to display 1024x768, you don't need the best 19-inch monitor. Widescreen is out. Try to find a good and cheap TN model. Read the sticky (The LCD Thread) for suggestions.

1024x768 will be displayed acceptably on a 19-inch monitor, even if its native resolution is 1280x1024. But the picture will be stretched vertically by about 6%, since 1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio and 1024x768 is a 4:3 ratio

I don't think you understand what is dynamic contrast ratio.

I had that very monitor for quite some time. Bought it in summer '06, and used it for about 5-6 months. It's really nice, especially if you are coming from a 17" CRT or so. It can be a disappointment if you're used to 20/21" CRT, as the height is lower.

That said, it makes no sense to spend the $$ on a 19", when 20" and 22" screens can be had for only a shade more, and sometimes even less. I bought my wife a 22" Westinghouse for $179 at a Best Buy sale. Check out the reviews at newegg.com, most people are plenty happy with TNs, but there are a few people who simply hate them (usually the people who can afford the $600ish 24" monitors).

Rule #1 with LCDs : Go see them in person before purchasing them.
Rule #2 with LCDs : Determine your budget, and look at as many models as possible that fit within.

If the PC has an AGP slot, it'd be worthwhile putting say a $40ish 6200 Nvidia board in there. It will make a world of difference, and free up the resources (cpu time, ram) that the onboard is currently sucking down.

If it is AGP 1/2x slot, it won't work. Mosto f onboard AGP mobos don't come with separate AGP port.

Well, lots of the VIA ones did, and the i815 boards usually had AGP slots as well (4x). I'd say it's a 50/50 chance.

PCI slot would even be a decent upgrade, with one caveat : you'd have to boot up on the onboard AGP output, tell XP that you want to change the primary video to PCI, then reboot and disable the onboard AGP altogether. Done that a few times with crappy Dell / HP systems that selfishly did not provide AGP slot.

PCI Geforce4MX >>>>>>>>>>>> Onboard crap AGP (i810/SiS/Via)
