I'm looking for a 19' monitor now, (changed my mind about 17'...) and I wanna know what you guys think is the best one for me - main use is gaming and web browsing so text is important.

Yeah I agree, those 17 footers are just too damn small . What price range are you looking at?

$450 will buy you just about any 19" on the market. Personally, I would go for one of the Sony FD Trinitrons, but if text is very important, then you may want to take a look at some shadow mask monitors, which generally have sharper text than aperture grille monitors (i.e. Trinitrons and Diamondtrons) but less vibrant colors. My advice would be to first narrow down your options then try to find some reviews online. Sony, NEC, Samsung, and Hitachi are all reputable brands. If you're willing to spend a little more, Newegg has the 21" Sony E540 for $469.00 with free shipping. Don't let the price fool you; my friend has it and it's a great looking monitor for the money.

you missed Iyama

just stick with anything that has a trinitron or diamondtron tube, basically an aperture grille.
they are true flat screens and have excellent color, contrast, 2d, etc.
and stay far, far away from the pseudo "flat" tubes, like the samsung 955df and the KDS crap.

I just picked up the Samsung 955DF about an hour ago, and I really like it so far. But this was $200. The Sony's are in your price range, and they are better, but I had trouble telling the difference. Personally, I think $400 is too much to spend unless you're going LCD. I'd rather put some of that cash into upgrading my computer or something. But thats just my opinion.

Yeah, but your computer will grow obsolete about 10 times faster than your monitor.

I've got a friend that has a 700NF and I must say that the image quality is pretty good, not upto par to say some of Sony's tubes but overall a very nice monitor for the price. As mentioned before, for a CRT, i would just go with a pretty good flat 19 like the samsung. I wouldn't spend 400+ for a monitor unless it was going to be an LCD, but it's your decision.

I would really recommend looking at samsung or hitachi monitors with the .20mm dot pitch. it really makes a fantastic difference. I'm using an old samsung 700IFT and it has the crispest pixels and most readable text I've ever seen on a CRT. supposedly the newer models are even better.

Anyone recommend anything that ISN"T a stupid trinitron or diamondtron? I play guitar and use a line6 guitarport which runs through your computer and if I have it at even a moderate volume the damn wires in the monitor vibrate. This is on an NEC FE991SB-BK, which i also notice that at any resolution and refresh other than 1024x768 85hz that there's this rippling strobe effect horizontally on the monitor. Pretty unhappy with it in general. I kinda figure that any trinitron based tube is going to give me issues, but I can't seem to find any monitor that i'm happy with. Those viewsonic 95f+ are junk, was thinking the samsung.

well the fact that a apreture grille monitor doesn't suit your needs doesn't mean that the -trons are junk. they reproduce colors the best and it's almost guaranteed that you'll get a quality tube (as far as I know - they're only Sony and Mitsubishi).

yesterday I saw side by side the high-end 19" flatron (which is suppsed to be one of the better alternatives to apreture grille - the display was LG F900P), compared to a mid-range AOC 17" w/ a diamontron tube (7A+). both were running 1280x960@85Hz and the flatron was a blurry mess at the corners. the 17", even though it has only 0.25 mask pitch (the standard is 0.24 I think, with that high-end sony at 0.22) on the other hand was crisp clear.

Good colors really don't help me much though if i can only use one resolution and can't turn up my speakers due to vibration. I mean not only the guitar does it but any music. If you cant' have a good sound system on your computer because of your monitor technology....

I mean my speakers are mounted on the wall for god's sake, they arent' even on the desk with the monitor and i still get that wonderful vibration. The rippling created at higher resolutions though was the bigger issue as I also do 3d work and if I can't even run at 1280x1024 without that nasty effect then the monitor does me no good. What's left? Text? Blurry. Gaming? Well it works good for gaming, unless of course you want a higher res than 1024x768, because if you do, ripples again.

NEC FE991SB-BK, diamondtron, but same thing.

Have contacted NEC support about both issues and they pretty much brushed em both off. The wavy lines in high res and refresh they are trying to say is an "interference" issue.
