I got my KDS Avitron 19" Trinitron

it is great, the menu is simple to use and great.

pRess one button and it autocalibrates the monitor to the specific resolution. Great for games, DOS, or just when u are changing resolutions.

It is just as flat as the Sony.

Also it can do 1920x1440 according to the box, which I found interesting since the kds site speaks nothing of this.
In the book that comes with it, it says "1900x1440 @ 73hz".
I installed the kds 195-tf drivers from their site, and it only allows up to 1600x1200 rez. Weird.

Another thing is the size of the buttons. Small for me, and I'm a kid so that is WAY too small but not a huge thing.

Also, heat is a bit high on top of the monitor. But it seems great.

Overall I think this is a great option for people who want a great monitor under $400.

If you have unlimited money go Sony.

I just wanted to do an honest update of a previous post.

I had owned an Samsung 900NF and it literally crapped out on me... the text went crazy and basically 'squibbled' back and forth on the screen. This came out of the blue and I was forced to return the monitor.

I have since purchased a KDS 19" Avitron and been very pleasantly surprised.

This monitor is of the same or higher quality than the Samsung, and after spending hours in front of both I concluded that they both have surpurb image and very good text quality... but the KDS has the nod on quality. I really am impressed and pleased.

GOOD JOB KDS and I recommend this monitor to anyone with a 400$-450$ price range. You will be pleased with your purchase.

Wow... I can't imagine this can go this far. Maybe I should clear my standpoint for most of us. The KDS tubes being Sony rejects is only a speculation on my own part. A speculation. It's what I speculate why they're so cheap. It maybe true, it may not be true, you can believe what you want. Im just voicing out my opinion. Dont blam me for that, Im not spreading wrong information. As for the prices, they must of done something special to make their monitors so much, if Sony is selling their monitors at such a high price, they must be selling their tubes to KDS for a high price as well. I just wonder how KDS could possibly have lower the price if they paid so much for the tubes.

it would be very cost-consuming to insptect every tube for perfect quality, and then ship out the "rejects" to KDS and MAG.

Sony obivously can charge more, more people know and trust Sony than KDS/MAG.

Do you pay more for Pepsi brand soda versus the Store brand soda?
yea. how did they make the same product for less, obviously they didn't, Pepsi charges more cause they are a huge name.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned NEC when talking about great monitors. I have used four NECs over the years, and they are awesome. I finally have one of their better models, the FP950, and it's fantastic -- I believe it uses a Mitsubishi tube.

NEC gets my vote.

Wow i have to say, this thread wwas useful in providing me with information on 19" monitors. I am still stuck between the sony g400, viewsonic pf795 and the samsung 900nf. I don't like the kds avitron because it runs hot. As for samsung and the viewsonic they are both oh so tempting because they are actually in STOCK and cheaper than the sony g400.

But this is what i have conluded. So far, on average....the worst opnion of the sony g400 has just been too expensive. people complain about bad packaging, but that has nothing to do with the monitor itself. AS for the geometry problem, i think it's cuz alot of you are not used to the FD technology, although some of you do genuiley have geomtery problems

As for the viewsonic pf790/pf795. Recemtly i have heard good things about this monitor, but many of you have said the text is blurry or fuzzy at high res, like the 1600x1200.

Finally as for the Samsung 900nf, I have heard some rare serious problems with the monitor but i think you can expect that with all mojnitors, plus you have to consider shipping damages too but other than that, i tink the Samsung is a fine monitor.

In the end, i have to wonder why some monitors are so much cheaper...is it because they won't last as long as the Sony monitors in the long run? WEll only time can tell.

Yeah, that's what I say dragon where is ROBOR?
ROBOR, ROBOR, here boy!!!

LXI: The only problem when you speculate out loud is that some people tend to spread that speculation and it ends up as vicious rumor. Reminds me of tires I used to buy at SEARS. Their brand "Roadhandler" was in fact made by Michelin. They lasted just as long as Michelin but were 30% cheaper. Did Michelin sell Sears tires with "reject" carbon black? Even if they did the tires were incredible.

I got My KDS av-195TF today and running it at 1280 X 1024 @85 and it is solid! I never seen a flat screen before and at first not use to it. My eyes was tired at first but I got use to it and it has crisp text and nice colors. Pretty impressive monitor! Still waiting for robor's comparison...

I have a Mitsu 900u myself, and I think it's pretty good. The top refresh rate is only 75hz at 1600x1200, but I can't stand it that high on a 19" anyway. Here's a review from that CAD site posted earlier. Btw, the price is considerably lower now.

5 stars out of 5

The Diamond Pro 900u, at $699, is priced almost exactly between the extremes in this review. Despite the middle-of-the-road price, the 900u?s feature set and performance place it in the professional category.

The 900u delivers the exceptional brightness and contrast typical of aperture-grille technology. With Mitsubishi?s patented Natural Flat tube, the display is close to distortion-free. As do some other flat-tube monitors, the 900u predistorts the image slightly to compensate for the concave effect produced by flat-tube designs. The 900u exhibited no defects in our tests. Although the monitor features one of the slowest dot clocks (150MHz) in this group, it refreshes the screen at an acceptable 75Hz at its maximum resolution of 1600X1200.

The 900u features a deep control menu with advanced features such as quadrant-level color purity adjustments. I found the on-screen menu and control buttons confusing and awkward to use. The representational icons aren?t always obvious, and Mitsubishi uses technical terms such as horizontal phase rather than the simpler horizontal position. Inexplicably, the text label for performing the same adjustment vertically is vertical position.

Additional features that help define the 900u as a professional unit include both BNC and D-sub connectors and a self-powered USB hub with dual upstream and three downstream ports.

An excellent image, deep controls, and a professional-level feature set, combined with a reasonable price, make this an excellent choice for the aperture-grille fan. Highly Recommended. ? J.V.B.

I would like to know what the difference is between the FD Trinitron tube and the Diamondtron NF tube. Anyone?

The difference between the DiamdonTron NF and FD Trinitron is the dot pitch size. The DiamondTron NF is about 0.25 and the FD Trinitron is around 0.24(or 0.22 on the F400/F500, they'll cost you your leg though). Other than that, they're pretty much equal, same AG tube, same flat screen, FD Trinitron is not 100% pure flat(virtually flat as they call it), the DiamondTron NF on the other hand, is pure flat.
