One thing I learned recently, if it's for your personal use, buy a good 21" CRT ($600+).
I bought a rather cheesy one and I've been regretting it everytime I use it.
Or, just buy a good 19" (Samsung 955DF?)

Hey,
Do NOT get a samsung 955df.. Samsung makes good.. nay.. GREAT.. monitors, but the 955DF is a total piece of crap... It's a value line monitor.. First, it flickers like crazy for anything about 1024x768.. Mine has gotten progressively fuzzier as time goes on.. It's VERY annoying.. Also, it's not a TRUE flat screen monitor.. If you look carefully, samsung is using an outer plastic shell that warps the image into LOOKING like a flat screen.. Hard to explain.. but it's not a flat tube monitor (I think samsung calls their true-flat monitors "NF" and not "DF")..

Get a nice refurbed sony...

You guys are all wrong! All DEAD wrong. The best 19" CRT monitor is the Hitachi CM721F or CM721FB (Black version). Hitachi is always the best...even better than Sony. My other 19" Hitachi monitor has not given me a SINGLE problem, and I purchased it in 98. Now the new CM721F monitors absolutely the best. They are flat screen and the clarity is unbeatable! You should read the reviews for this model at Newegg.com. I now have the Black Version of this monitor and couldn't be happier. The images are vibrant and brilliant!

maxcompg, don't listen to any of those guys, they don't know what they are talking about. Get the Hitachi CM721F(B)....black preferrable. The buttons are so user friendly when it comes to adjusting brightness/contrast/size/etc. You can get it for $266 or $277(black) from monitors direct.

Also, these monitors are .20mm horizontal dot pitch! Quite liquid smooth if you ask me!

Not true, this being a computer forum, most of us around computers a lot, I think we do know what we're talking about. Just because you've had great experiene with that Monitor doesn't make it the ONLY monitor out there.

Always the best? Riiight..better than Sony? Sure thing. Every other monitor listed here is flat screen, and Im sure the images on them are also vibrant a brilliant. But come on, the NEC FP912 can at least do 85hz at 1600x1200, cant say the same for your killer Hitachi. Just lay off dude, and make your suggestions without being so hostile towards everyone else.

My Sony G420 is da bomb...why do you think Sony has such a good rep - that's right, because they make awesome monitors..

I tried a lot of monitors and settled on the LG Flatron 915FT Plus, the one in front of me right now has the best quality screen out of all the monitors I looked into.

Also Iiyama are worth looking into.

wdude, learn to read, this P1110 is NOT new.

Like it says in the description,

This product has been factory serviced to function in NEW CONDITION. It may include some minor pin-sized nicks or scratches.

That said, I bought one a year ago from Dell Financial Services, off-lease, in A-1 condition and it looks great!

Excelsior, the NEC may run at 85Hz at 1600x1200, but you're paying $290 for it didn't you say? The Hitachi CM721F can run at 85Hz up to 1280x1024, and 75Hz at 1600x1200...but using this as a good reason to purchase the NEC over the Hitachi I would say is quite poor. Tell me, how many people do you actually know that runs their monitors at 1600x1200???? You basically have to get a magnifine glass at that res. anyhow! The icons are so tiny, and I myself would never want to go beyond 1280x960!

Sure, if you're going for a 21" monitor, then 1600x1200 is just fine. But we're talking 19" here! So instead of railing on me, take things in their overall perspect and look from a logical point of view. I have a feeling you're going more by feelings that practicallity.

God... What's with the hostility.. We're talking about monitors here, not mothers.. Hell, if someone said that their mother was better than mine, I'd probably be angry at first.. Defensive even.. After a while it would sink in.. The memories of being forced to take piano lessons.. Little league.. Being told that I should be more "out going." Eventually, it would all come back.. And, while I wouldn't give my friend the satisfaction of admitting that he was right, I would just reflect on all the years gone by that I was living someone elses dreams.......

Whos the one going by feelings here...you are. No one else said ...

We just made suggestions. You simply said we were all wrong, and that the BEST 19" monitor, no matter what is that Hitachi. Your only reason? its .20 dot pitch. How is it better than Sony? You didn't say, and I seriously doubt most think the way you do. I know A LOT of people that use 1600x1200 ona 19", you don't need a magnifying glass. The fact is, the shadowmask on that Hitachi is better for text, the Diamondtron on the NEC is better for graphics/games/movies. What is he going to use this monitor for? Typing up reports all day, or half and half?

Go do the monitors direct comparison if you want.

Well, I don't have any particularly striking recommendations, except that the sony g410r is pretty mediocre. That's what I'm running now. While the contrast is quite good, the convergence in the corners never seems to be 100% on. It's a good solid monitor worth probably $250, but if you're looking for "the best", I'd avoid this particular model.

Monitors on a budget? Your Friend: MerkorTech

I got a Hitachi SuperScan Elite 751 for under $175 shipped (actually a HP M900 that's a rebadge).

check them out...I even had a problem with my first screen due to shipment abuse and they took care of it very quickly.

They package the monitors in new boxes with blown in foam, you can't get better than that. Both of the screens appeared as good as brand new cosmetically also.

I wanted a 21" from them, but since I don't have my own place right now, space is on a budget

I do , Hitachi also 16x12@75....I used to run my 17GLsi at 11x9 or something like that....some days it is hard to make out small text if my eyes are tired, but I enjoy the extra screen real estate for having as much info on the screen at one time....

For games I stick with 10x7@85+

I don't understand why everyone thinks the fonts are so small at 1600X1200. The fonts, like the icons and what not are all adjustable through the windows display manager. Run larger fonts etc. and also enjoy the extra real-estate.

I run 1600x1200@75Hz on my Philips 109B. With a good video card it's quite manageable, but the 75Hz refresh is less than ideal. Now I wish that I'd have gotten a ViewSonic P95F+ or NEC FP912, as both monitors can do 1600x1200 at 85Hz.
