Well as long as we are talking budget, here is an excellent PSU for $39.99 AR. Will easily handle either system recommended and even step into the mid range SLI/Crossfire zone.

Edit: Screw that it's sold out.

Those are just as important components as anything else, if not more, and a lot of people don't know what makes a power supply good so really that's the most important recommendation.

Corsair HX-520 for non-SLI or HX-620 for SLI.

you should never count MIRs in your pricing. You have to pay the full price up front and you MAY get the MIR in 6-8 weeks.

MIR is probably the most common discount you'll find online and any deal hunting forums or sites will factor them into the final price, the sooner you accept that the better off you will be as far as bargains and what not.

If you want to add a high quality, low cost, budget Power supply to the list you will not find anything better then this for price/performance/quality. This will provide enough power for all current single GPU possibilities except the high end 8800 and X1950 GPU's.

Omg here go the complains now...

@yacoub
Dude it clearly states AFTER $50 MIR.... add 50 n thats ur final front price... cmon now I dont like em either but its part of the business.

@F4Phantom
Its not stupid to say possible overclock.... or in other words Able to.... the average should be able to hit those overclocks there might be a chance or 2 where it doesnt hit that high... but normally u should be able to. And I started the thread as main components that make a system overlock... Power of course is important... but if u only knew how much time just the edittin of this thread took... lets take it easy... besides if u can start recommending some power supplies instead of just complaining about not puttin em... maybe it would help more... since I havent been reading a lot about power supplies lately... thats Y i like as much input as possible to put it all together... and if u guys provide links would be even nicer. Thank You

@huskyThe G Skill looks good the only thing i didnt look at it much maybe coz it has a cas 5 rating... and i donno if its any good overclocker... since the reviews dont say much about it... only 3-4 of em say good ocer. Now its @ $115... pretty nice i will put it in maybe... but its gettin 2 many ram choices ....

Id like some more Mobo Options sub 120 for the intel.... maybe a i650 good overclocker? i dont care if SLI or not...

And maybe some power supplies that are good for a 8800 or better card single setup.... I know those 2 corsairs r very good... but maybe we need to find 1 that has an 6+2pin PCI-E connector ( for R600 cards) like this Enermax Infinity but they way 2 expensive
... if u can find something like that but for about $100-130 then thats the ONE.

When that guy says "midrange" what does he mean? Will that PSU handle an over clocked E4300, other components and a 8800GTS? If so I'm in for it.

With that PSU the total cost of my system excluding a GPU will be $550 after rebates. Plus the $225 or so for a discounted 8800GTS and you have $775 that will be able to destroy any game for a long time (can't wait for Crysis!!!).

@Rapishorrid

The Xclio 500W seems like a nice choice for little money ($57) If ur not gonna do SLI I think it should be enough for a single gts... but close to the limit maybe 17A on the 12v... If it was me id go for 1 of those Corsair 520w and be sure no headaches... thou they go for $105 at ZZF... but they are Modular.... so many choices... but whatever plp recommended above they all great power supplies... Id lean towards a single 12v rail as well... and the corsair is 1 of em.

@ richardrds

nice PS for sure but not what I was askin for theres no 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors for the upcoming R600 cards that need 1... eventhou i think i read somewhere that the cards will run with 2 6 pins only as well... instead of 1 8pin and 1 6pin as recommended.

That is true. However, last time I pointed it out I was thoroughly berated for the heresy. The claim is that any and all C2D chips are capable of close to 3GHz, the limiting factor being other parts like mobo/RAM. That being said on the one hand, OTOH it doesn't matter in a sense what limits it but the fact that some people just can't clock any higher. I know a few guys at the LAN parties I go to who got on the C2D bandwagon but can't clock very high. Does it matter that they don't have the "right" motherboard?

Anyways, I'm still waiting for the "right" mATX C2D board. That Abit Fatal1ty board is looking good!

The motherboard is actually absolutely crucial to overclocking ceiling and stability.

Hi all,

I had to finally upgrade to a Dual Core system. I was running an Athlon 3200+ Venice CPU and Nvidia Nforce 3MB with DDR400 and Geforce 5200 AGP card. I was on a tight budget, so I considered the options.

As Athlon 939 Dual Core processors are about as scarce as hen's teeth, and an AM2 upgrade would have required the immediate purchase of DDRII memory and a PCI Express card, it was looking like a $400+ upgrade (Canadian Dollars) to get a decent setup.

I decided instead to go with an ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA motherboard for $67 and a E4300 processor, $195, could not wait for the price drops...

The advantage here is that I could use my OSZ Premier DDR400 and AGP card and pick up DDRII memory and a PCI Express card later for cheap, as the motherboard takes AGP and PCI Express cards and DDR or DDRII.

Anyways, it was the easiest setup ever, ran stock at 200FSB for 1800MHz for 2 days, then started overclocking, 1st to FSB222 for 2000MHz, which ran my DDR400 at DDR444 speed.

Then went to FSB 233, and 266 so my RAM would stay at DDR400, I now have my E4300 running at 2400Mhz, Idle temp 35C, at load 40-42C. So far very easy, all stock voltages, using the Intel CPU cooler.

Going to stay at this speed until I get a better cooler, then its up to 300FSB for 2700MHz.

Very satisfied so far, this is my first Intel CPU since the 386SX days. (Ancient Times)

heheh thats exactly my situation right now... Nforce 3 and agp card with ddr400... (check my sig) But im planning to go with the above intel setup in about 2 weeks... or as soon as i get some info on the next K10 chips performance... eventhou i think im pretty much set on my mind for e4300... this way i let prices go down a lil bit more... and then hopefully the R600 cards r coming out at about same time... at least we have some numbers by 4/24.... so basically I have to wait till R600 to buy anythin... because without the vidcard I cant even do anything... I ve been lookin at the e6430 too thoe... but I donno if they worth the extra 70 bucks... since im kinda tight on the budget... Id prefefr to spend the extra $$ on a vidcard instead of processor...

So far the ASRock 4CoreDual VSTA has got to be the easiest motherboard I have ever setup, except for the Intel CPU cooler. I have never had such an easy time overclocking.

I am running my OCZ Premier DDR 400 at Command Rate 2, never had much success with it at Command Rate 1 on my Athlon system, but, maybe I will try to persuase them by bumping to voltage just a wee bit... right now the MB is giving the memory slightly less than its stock voltage...

Excuse me? Why the heck are people talking about $100+ PSUs for a budget overclock system? We're talking e4300 and x2 3600 here, folks, not QX6800.

Get a Sparkle or FSP ~400 watt for $45. Look on Newegg, there's a lot of options for them. That'll power a strong graphics card, too.

I think Nvidia recommends a minimum 400W Power Supply that provides at minimum 26Amps on the +12V for their 8800GTS series. You should be OK with the XCILO 500W.

I was lookin for the hardware he tested the 450 with... but he doesnt mention it there i donno what kinda tests is he doin... so cant recommend... These overclocked systems even on a budget are supposed to be paired with some nice Vidcards... at least thats my intentions... So besides being OC-ed, add a hungry vidcard and we will need a quality PSU... 520W is not so much anyways... its just that quality costs money... but i still included a budget 1... If theres some recommendations pls bring em on...

It may be an e4300, but it will be running at over 3ghz. Add a 8800 into the loop and you are going to need a nice power supply.

I intend to have a nice vid card too - this may be a "budget" system but it certainly isn't going to perform like one.

I would recommend this one

Enhance 5150, Power Supply for Budget System

That's what I originally had in mind until these cheaper suggestions came up Still trying to decide though
Also if any of you are willing to spend $90 on a PSU, here's a deal.

I have had several Fortron PSs. They are excellent.

I keep hearing Enhance is also excellent for the price.

I've decided I am going to start this upgrade as soon as I can. The memory will be ordered tonight probably (OCZ Premium). Next step for me is to sell the rig I am on now for about $500, grab an E4300 after the price drop and then all other components. I am not going to get a video card right away though, I'll pop an old PCI-E card in (just so I can use the computer) and wait a bit for possible price drops or new cards.

Thanks for the suggestions guys... I added everything i could and changed a few things to make it easier to read...

Rapid u see I cant order anything because I dont have an old PCI-E.... so having all the parts here, not being able to test em while waiting for the AMD cards... will make me go on a suicide... better off i wait till they come out so the core2duo prices go down... let us know what exact parts u gonna get..

Now that I think about it I may not have an old PCI-E card laying around...

Memory
2GB OCZ Platinum Revision 2 - $116.90
Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 - $124.97
Fan/Heat sink
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - $29.72
Power Supply
Xclio Good Power 500w - $57.63
Case
Antec P180 Midtower - $79.99
Processor
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 - $135.00

Total: $544.21
All prices are after any applicable rebates and as of April 19

With the price drops I'll either save some cash there or get a better processor for the same cost as the E4300 now. I am also contemplating the case too - $80 is a bit steep for a budget system, but after all it is a P180!

Depending on what video card is put in there, that's a system that will run Crysis in all of its glory - without busting my wallet.

isn't there any decent RAM (2 gig) pc6400 for 130 without MIR?
as you wish
