So it appears as though the '08 Altima is sticking with Nissan's 2.5L 4-banger. I can't say I know much about the car at all.

I was impressed when Toyota finally went to a chain-based 4 vs. the old belt. I do love my 5sfe 4-cylinder Toyota motor, but based on today's current motors, I'm wonderin' which is the best among them.

Oh, and the reason I mentioned the Elantra is based on the "World Motor (?)" which Hyundai uses in the Sonata, but skipped using in the Elantra....(they stuck w/ the less refined 2.0).

I believe Mitsubishi uses that motor and perhaps others, too.....(?)

Chain causes more drag on the engine, so technically a belt is better if you are intelligent to change it every 60,000 miles/3 years.

Did a Wiki read on the Honda K series engines. Pretty impressive stuff.

I'm not ashamed to say I'm a Toyota fan, but I'm seriously curious to see what Toyota will do in the next 2.x (post 2AZ-FE) as they didn't change it w/ the Camry's makeover this year, minus the FXE for use in the hybrid.

Turbo: Toyota 1JZ-GTE. Excellent power, Straight 6 so incredibly smooth, capable of higher revving than the fabled 2JZ-GTE but still produced similar power at lower rpms also. 300hp@6200rpm and 268fl-lbs @4800rpm. Not 4 cylinder, but what the hey.

For 4cyl, I'd go MZR Turbo DSI

N/A: Honda K20A(1). Most power and torque of all the K20s. Narrower powerband though, peak torque at 7000rpm, peak hp at 8000rpm. 8500rpm redline makes it great for race but not so great for street use.

if one doesn't care about max HP/L from NA, the TSX K24A2 mk2 makes K20A power but with a much wider powerband. The K24 is basically a factory stroked K20.

Love them factory strokers.

Nice, long stroke (did this thread just get dirty? ) w/ a relatively short rod for serious piston speed & "kick in the pants" torque!!!

I'm going to go with the 2.3L Mazda DISI MZR engine in the Speed 3 and Speed 6...

The third and most critical parameter involves upgrading the powertrain. Again, to be considered a Mazdaspeed vehicle, the 3 had to be the class leader in terms of useable power and torque. So it receives the same turbocharged inline-four MZR engine found in the Mazdaspeed6 and new CX-7 SUV. This advanced engine is Mazda's own flagship design based on a turbocharged 16-valve, DOHC 2.3-liter with integrated direct injected spark ignition (DISI) architecture. A heavily modified turbo MZR engine, featuring a similar DISI design, powers current NHRA Sport Compact ProFWD Champion Ed Bergenholtz's 1400-plus hp Mazda6.

DISI is the latest technology to hit the automotive industry. Right now, only Mazda and VW/Audi sell direct injection gasoline engines, which have a couple of distinct advantages over traditional port injection engines.

Port injection mixes fuel and air in the intake runners at about 35 to 60psi, while Mazda DISI engines mix a pure charge of air with fuel injected directly into the cylinder at over 1600psi. The higher pressure creates a denser, more homogeneous air/fuel mixture and cleaner, more powerful burn. Spraying fuel directly into the cylinder also provides a cooling effect, which results in greater combustion efficiency and knock deterrance-Mazda estimates a three to five per cent improvement in fuel economy over port injection engines.

I may be biased...it seems like anything Mazda flies under the radar compared to some of the other brands...

Edit:

It was on Ward's best engines of 2007 list...

Also, looks like Mazda gets 160HP out of it NA, and their champ car got 300HP out of it NA! :Q

i saw a 2.0 turbo'd golf GTI.. tried to race me. this thing was newer.. like a 2002 or 2004 maybe. i actually like these cars. i drive a 1992 full size rusty chevrolet pickup that gets around pretty good, 232 almost 233k miles on the 4.3 v6. this dude guns it, it backfires blowing oil smoke all over. i laughed. theyre probably one of the few little cars id like to own but that just made me laugh. plus i dont race in my truck, it might blow up

Don't even get me started on this, I get mad every time I think about the crap we have to buy here in the US.

Funny story.

I was driving a friend home from work in my new car and I was telling him that I really wanted the diesel version of it. He riped into me with the usual misconceptions about diesel (Poor power, loud, dirty, etc.) and if I wanted good MPG I should get a Honda. I pointed to a car in front of us and asked what he thought about that car.

Him: ?What, the Jetta? Ya, thats a good car.?

Me: ?Thats a diesel.?

Him: ?...?

K frank, all factory parts except for the header. accord shortblock, TSX pistons/rods, RSX-S head, 235 WHP/185 WTQ (~275 HP/ 220 ft-lbs at the crank)

http://www.youtube.com/v/s_lbT9jBKr0

that's an otherwise stock TSX engine in a hatchback

Either of those setups will still get 30+ mpg highway if you take it easy.

I still think the MZR is a better motor...just less well known...

Doesn't the MZR make more HP stock than a stock K20?

While I love Mazdas and am an owner of one, I would have to disagree. It's a good engine with a good bit of power and torque in the speed6 and speed3 as well as the CX-7, but there are already lots of little problems popping up in those cars.

Maybe I am actually biased against Mazda in this regard, because my Protege5 has what is possibly the worst 2.0L engine this decade. It puts out about 100 hp, and gets 25-30mpg regularly.

From a technical standpoint is how I'm looking at it. A stock MZR engine puts out 160HP...

Also, look at what simple AFR tuning did for a Speed 3...

http://pics.apartment808.com/users/Insane3D/BEGi_MS3_stockandXede.jpg

The problem is, the MZR engine pretty much flies under the radar because Mazda is not where people expect this kind of an engine.

As for problems, I've been immersed in Mazda forums since I got the Speed, and I'm not seeing any engine related problems...

There are a couple people who have had leak problems on the speed, but it's nowhere near widespread unless two or three people on a forum makes something widespread...
