The BMW M12/13 Turbocharged I4 engine was famous during its life for being the first Formula 1 engine capable of 1000hp in racing trim, although it was capable of nearly 1400hp for qualifying with modification of its boost.

I think that was a 1.5l engine though. Man, I would have loved to hear that engine at full song in competition...

For engine 2.0 or greater I'd have to go with the Subaru 2.5l turbocharged engine in the WRX-STI.

BTW-For the ultimate 4 banger ever I'd give the nod to the turbocharged BMW engines they entered into Formula One in the 1980s. Those suckers produced over 1000hp.

you're all about the elise now, aren't you?

It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head. It uses MPI multi-point fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder, is turbocharged and intercooled and features forged steel connecting rods. With the release of the Lancer Evolution IX (286hp @ 6500rpm, 289ft*lb of @ 3500rpm, 7000rpm redline), it has received Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve timing system, which gives smoother power delivery and a flatter torque curve.

Looks like only the EvoIX puts out more, and barely more for having a much larger turbo...

It has a larger turbo, but .3l less displacement. There's also an Evo FQ 300/320/340 (all with respective bhp output) with the same engine.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more proven, bullet-proof and performance oriented engine outside of the 2jz.

I think you have forgotten the 7 bolt bottom ended Gen II DSMs with crankwalk. It is very prevalent and due to that problem, which is an entirely fatal flaw, i cannot recommenend the engine line as a whole, maybe in a particular trim but not the whole engine as a model.

Yeah the 7 bolt definitely is excluded from that line. There are plenty of 7 bolts still running strong though, just not a 4g63 I'd recommend.

I see we've already covered the fact that all DSMs should come with a leash and collar for taking your crank for a nice long walk.

Carry on.

Stock. Crank the boost. not bad for a 2L engine.

BTW, I'm going to need them overnighted from Japan.

man i love the SR20DET motor...but that engine was originally from the early 1990. hasnt really been changed much and was stopped in production in 2004

You owned an SR20DET swapped 240SX, didn't you?

My wife's friend's boyfriend (degrees of separation = teh lose) bought a non-running 240SX with one of those under the hood. What possessed him to buy someone else's failed boyracer project I'll never know. Once it's actually running, he's "hoping to go for 12's" ... but as of now, he lost to me. On foot.

God only knows what the thing needs to get running, but to put it into scale - it's got electrical tape under the hood for a wiring harness.

yeah that was me...i miss that car

well you know another man's trash is another man's treasure. yeah thats pretty ghetto to have electrical tape for a wiring harness

Here's what my motor swapped look liked with custom fabrication piping for a front mount intercooler and other goodies.

Jus ttell him to do this

The stock output is just a starting point. It'll put out big power on the stock block and the aftermarket is pretty big.

Definitely, one of the best performance 4 bangers ever made. These things can put out upwards of 900 HP with the right stuff. Large after market due to MR2 and Celica and a very popular engine in rally racing.

Also need I remind everyone here.... those 600, 700, 800+ HP figures you see on I4s.... it can only be done with 30+ PSI boost, those are for RACING ONLY, not for street use. Same goes for 1000 HP Supra I6's, etc.

Unless you can fill up with 116 octane and top off the methonal injection tank at your nearest Circle K in order to drive around on 30+ PSI all day, then I wouldn't consider them daily driver street cars. However on a street tune for 93 octane with less boost can still turn out a still respectable ~400+ HP range I4.
