Server CPUs are more powerful, but somehow i doubt you actually want the best

Best for a home PC:

Single core performance champ from AMD - AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 (2.8 GHz)
Dual-core performance champ from AMD - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (2 x 2.4 GHz)

Single core performance champ from Intel - Intel Pentium 4 670 (3.8 GHz)
Dual-core performance champ from Intel - Intel Pentium D 840 EE (2 x 3.2 GHz)

Overall performance champ IMO - X2 4800+

Wait a bit and pick up a pair of dual core opterons

If you want it all and want it now, the X2 4800+ is most definitely the best. Pair it with 2gb of high performance ram and a pair of 7800GTXs and you're flying

If all you do is play games, & nothing else at the same time...the FX-57 is teh way to go.

But overall, the X2s are so much better. Sure, you lose a frame or two in games. So you have 101 fps instead of 105 fps. Big deal.
The beauty of the X2s is how you can encode that video you've been working on while playing BF2
That doesn't happen too well on anything but the dual-cores

What do you want to do with the system?

If you dont game or do heavy multitasking, etc , get your self a dell.

almost as fast as the 4800, $400 cheaper. The only difference is 512kb less cache.

Athlon 64 X2 4400+

Only 200MHz slower than the 4800+ with the full 1MB cache and easily overclocked past those speeds.

lots of video encoding, gaming, mutlitasking maybe even hosting a few web pages, this thing is going to be running 25 hours a day.

that's actually wat destroyed my prescott machine, the processors dont actually go that easy it will take a lot of pounding and heat to destroy a processor, however it seems that the heat the prescott was producing destroyed my socket, which is pretty much the whole board. but that's really besides the point, while i was using the machine, it never actually caused much issues in terms of my work but it always seemed like it was about to explode any moment, that's why i am not looking for an intel. i give up on them. but i think i am going with X2 now. I hope u all did ur homework, i will let u know wat becomes of it.

I am really impressed with the capabilities and performance of the 64 X2 cpus, i read a few reviews, seen some live action and i think i am going with it. I want to thank you all for doing your homework i certainly didnt. If you are wondering i am not paying for it, so it is not big deal for me. I just wanted the best and i think i got it. I am bidding and looking around for a good deal. I am building this thing ground up, so if you know of any good boards out there please let me know. I am looking for something very very very very upgradeable if it makes any difference. again though no exceptions.

Dual core is the way to go.

IMO, its not THAT far behind in games compared to the FX.

Other then gaming, the dual core has so many more advantages over the FX.

The X2 would be a fine choice.

Well, it isn't Intel's fault that you couldn't figure out how to cool your Prescott

Be sure to keep us informed

At any rate.... why the Power 5 Zebo. I dont know much about it.

For the average consumer the Dual Cores are awesome. I would recommend saving money just to get one over a single core. While they might not make that much of a difference right now, once multi-threaded drivers, games, and other apps come, the differences will be huge.
