Best 3TB drive to get?

How are the reliability of these things? It's only gonna be storage for music, movies, and all my media stuff. I got a SSD on the way for my boot drive

As long as you don't plan to raid them, there fine.
(*If you do "some" setups have problems with them)

I had my hands on a few they worked well none failed in 5 months of use. I sold them all on ebay when the prices sky rocketed after the flood. Make sure your gear can handle 3tb drives. DeadMilkman is correct they can struggle with some raid cards.


A great 2 bay raid box that can run raid0 or raid1 is the sans digital ts2ct

I used this raid box with mac mini's mac pros and imacs. Worked well with the 3tb western digitals. I had a rosewill 8 bay drive case

I had two of the Seagate Barracuda 3TB drives (model ST3000DM001) last month. Both only lasted a few days and then started the clicking sounds. They then stopped showing up in the BIOS. I returned them and went with Hitachi Deskstart 7K3000 and Western Digital Black 2TB drives. Both of those worked fine, but returned the WD because of the noise, as the Hitachi was much quieter.

Well when the 3tb wd's came out dec 2010 I purchased quite a few and they were decent. then Last april 2011 a batch came out that had march dates a lot of them died off quickly. I was lucky in that I purchased most of mine with nov 2010 dates.

I just went on my wdc account.

I had a total of 32 of them 2 died so 30 out of 32 are working.

Most are nov 2010 dates. All were oem naked drives. I resold some I built a few raid boxes for people. Since the flood happened last nov 2011 I would really be afraid of buying them. Not because of any dishonesty on wd's part but they are most likely having all kinds of pressure to get back on schedule.

I used wd's because they have a good rma system. they also had an owners loyalty program before the flood. I was able to source hdds from them directly using the owners loyalty program. I intend on using them again when things get back to normal.

SSD for boot and then get the cheapest (and most reliable) 3TB drive you can find. Unfortunately, 2TB+ drives appear to be lacking in the reliability.
