best 48x cdr drive?

The best is up for debate, but the liteon drives are definitely quality, and they are dirt cheap. As an added bonus you can get a 40X drive and upgrade the firmware to 48X, worked great for me. If rewriting is a concern, then you might wanna be on the lookout for the new ultraspeed RW drives that allow rewrite speeds of around 24x, as opposed to the standard 12x hsrw that has been around for a while now.

Lite-on is the way to go if you want a fast drive at a low price. Toshiba makes drives that have lower access times than the average drive, and also seem to be a bit quieter. Asus makes a good CD-ROM drive as well. However, the latter two come at a bit of a premium. Actually, I would suggest that you buy a DVD-ROM drive because they are not that much more expensive.

I use a TDK Cyclone because it looks better in my case, but if I were you I'd get a 40X Lite-On, which can be transformed into a 48X simply by flashing it with the 48X firmware.

Some TDKs ARE Liteons.....I bought a 40x TDK and flashed it to 48x with the latest Liteon firmware.
