Best 56k modem?

Are there drivers for the USR 2977 in Win XP? I saw Win2K drivers but not all Win2k drivers will transfer over to XP without problems. Anyone here try it?

Ok, I have another question. Would this Lucent modem with an Agere chipset from www.computer123.com still be as good as other Lucent modems?

Edit: Or did I misunderstand this? Now I see on the same website a modem under the Encore Networks heading that says "+ Lucent / Agere 56K PCI Data/Fax Modem".

I second and third the idea that hardware modems are better, b/c they're more sophisticated devices and can hold to connection better. Winmodems can be good on an ideal line, but this is a rarity is real world. Every line has some noises, pops, glitches etc. And hardware modem can actually deal with them while a software one will disconnect. I'm still on a modem connection (broadband isn't available in my area) and I know what I'm talking about.

I haven't had good luck with any motorola modem..they are suck IMHO

just about any modem hardware or win from a well known manufacturer will be fine

I would disagree, I've used their external products(28.8/56K) and they're some of the best imo.

I have a hardware serial modem and a Lucent winmodem, and besides a quick spike in CPU usage when the Lucent is starting/closing the connection, both operate about the same. I think the argument is moot with today's CPUs.

I'd get the modem you have linked to. I have one and get many, many UT & HL servers at a 160 ping or less, a few being down to 140. And I *think* the V.92 quick connect feature will work even if the ISP doesn't fully support V.92.

The best modem I've ever had is a PCTEL POS chipset 5 dollar after rebate job. Holds real nice at 50.6.

OTOH, I've used a USR external in bad conditions and it's held well.

For the most part, expensive modems are just that.
