yeah.. I used to have a IBM 60gxp, and when I replaced a bunch of my fans with these quiet panaflo fans, I realized that alot of the noise (specifically the high pitched whine) was actually coming from the HD.. Then later I got a larger WD drive and it was even louder!

now, I'm waiting for my new seagate to be delivered..

Just another option:

Samsung now has the SP-1213N and SP-1614N (120GB and 160GB, respectively) with 8MB of cache available in the US. I recently got a SP-1213N and I have been impressed. Noticeably quieter than my WD800JB... not to mention running MUCH cooler. Benchmarks are very similar between the two.

I think either the Samsung or the Western Digital would be just fine. Good luck!

Well, seems like it's turning out that Maxtor, WD, and Seagate are all pretty close together in terms of performance and reliability. If this is the case, I'll be taking noise level into serious consideration... Seagate, I guess?

I have all three and no complaints with any so far, although I do have my eye on the WD Special Ed due to some bad drives many years ago. They are all very quiet, at least the ones I have, but if you want *QUIET* then I would have to say Seagate. I have to have near total silence to hear head seeks in my WD-Special Ed or Maxtor, but I can't hear the Seagate. All are 80g - 120g with 8 meg cache.

PS: Nope - I'm not deaf either. I can hear my wall clock ticking from 15 feet away when it's quiet.

I have a WD 80 GB SE and it is very quiet. I can only hear the drive if I have the case open.

My WD2000JB is noticeably faster than my WD1200JB. I got it for $130 (after rebates) a month ago, and the deal is still going at my local Fry's.

Get a seagate harddrive, they are solid and very reliable... and also silent.

Definitely an IBM 180GXP 120MB 8MB if you're in it for the performance. However the newer WD1200JB 'E' or 'F' series are almost as fast too, since they have 80GB platters. Avoid the 'C' or 'D' revisions since they have 40/60GB platters and are significantly slower.
