Of course you would, you're a Porsche-nut

I've got nothing against them. I'd just rather have a RUF modified version of that Carerra

I forgot about the VW corado... Nice car!

Now where I am confused is how a car with two doors and lots of horsepower is a sports car, but as soon as you add two more doors it does not qualify for this thread. Why not? Any car that can accelerate 0-60 in under 6 seconds and has a skid pad rating of at least .80g sounds like a sports car to me. (That should cover everything from Z28 and Mustang SVT to an M5 and beyond.) Hell, you have thrown out any Audi and Volvo when you as for two doors only.

Have you seen BTCC racing before? They run sedans based on production models. It is not uncommon to see a Mondeo, S40 (volvo), Accord STI, and other sedans running the circuit.

Sorry for the rant, but I was taken back by that comment that a sedan is not a sports car. No hard feelings!

I don't think that anyone said that a sedan wasn't a sports car. I said that no Mercedes is a sports car...regardless of the numbers

Lingenfelter or Callaway Twin Turbo Vette. The most appealing view of a Porsche is the one of them as little specs in your rear view mirror

Sticking closer to $50K the Z06 Vette has its' way with its' German competition concerning performance while offering a better ride and vastly superior reliability, not to mention you can drive it in the winter where I live(I know AWD Porsche, try taking a C4 out for a spin in New England after an ice storm, rear engine may be great for some things...).

The only thing the Corvette has going against it is the big 'ol backend and the cheapass interior.

One major bad point with Porsche, Ferdinand was a personal friend and supporter of Adolf Hitler(the truth, beats a fat @ss too ).

It has to be the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI extreme, for just pure driver enjoyment.

All I want is an All Black Dodge Viper... that's all I want.

Flames coming out of the exhaust and a license plate that says "SnkBite"

For all you out there that have said an American car... WHY??
There is no doubt that American cars are some of the worst designed/visual cars in the world... but you wouldnt know, cause u do not import any foreign cars! As for the comment that your cars can take the twisties... which one? The viper? Dont make me laugh.... all they do is whack the biggest engine they can in a tank and call it a sports car... what a joke.

The japs actually use technology to achieve great performance. A car which is damn rare here in the US (yep im in the US at the moment so I should know) is the Suburu WRX STI... this 4 cylinder turbo boxer engned car is quicker than nearly 95% of American junk cars... 0 - 100 KMPH in 5.0 seconds.. suck on that.. its not a V10, its a 4 cylinder and it blows most of you away. How much ? try about $25000 - 30000!!

The Skyline GTR is a car like this that uses great technology to make it the quickest production car in the world. Those who say its ugly must be American... u have no car design abilities at all. The skyline handles awesome, accelerates awesome and has an awesome top speed... those yanks out there that bag it have never even seen it, once u do, you'll forget about your silly Viper with a truck steering wheel equipped as standard.

hey Toxin-

What exactly is the Type V for the S2000?
What extras/enhancements does it have?

Is this in the U.S.?

Give me a nice Benz anyday

Sports cars are for kids...and they are NOT an everyday car...go on vacation in one and you'll know what i mean. Laying down with the frikken sun baking you under that raked windshield. Porche 911's aren't as bad...but still have a rough ride.

one note on Skylines- they ARE importing them here to the US- I saw one on PCH during the school year... it was a nice GTR R34 VSPEC all riced out with some Blitz stuff... including a phat intercooler, blow off valve, and exhaust I pulled up next to him in my little Integra and rolled down the window to talk to him- which was pretty interesting since he was so close (right hand driver of course). I asked him where he got it, and he said that his friend in Torrance imports them (http://www.skylinegtr.com). I also asked him how much he paid for it- he said $80k! That's probably including the fact that he DOES have it modified by Blitz... but man that thing was sweet... a change from the F355 spyders and Diablos I'd see everyday... not quite an exotic car, but different And a comment on Mercedes- bring more stickshifts over! As of right now, the only stickshift Mercedes in the US are the SLK 230, available with a 5sp tranny, and the SLK 320, available with a 6spd... if Benz's were available in stickshift, I'd bet more people would start getting those instead of BMW's =P Just imagine a CLK430 with a 6 spd tranny... omg drool... Now what they need out there is an affordable sports SEDAN- a real one- not one like a 540i Sport or anything- BMW should start making a 4 door M3 again... it's a shame that they're only gonna be coming out in a coupe or convertible model this year and this is coming from the proud owner of a '97 Integra GSR Sedan

DLC is obviously trolling, so ignore him. Regardless of whether he makes good points or not, he's being an a**hole about it.

As for not importing enough stick shifts, I agree, I want more. But sadly, we won't be getting more. Germans think fat lazy americans don't want to be bothered with a manual transmission, which for the most part is true. 90% of cars in the US are automatic, whereas 90% of cars in Germany are manual. And I can't wait till I go there next week and rent a car!

DLC,

I don't care for the Viper...but surely, you jest when you say a Subaru WRX or Skyline can embarass the mighty Viper GTS! I have seen all of these cars in action, but of the three, NO car gives drivers of the other cars the feeling like, "I know it's ridiculous...but maybe I can beat this Viper." The Viper driver knows he's at the top of the food chain. So it's natural to see cars give it all their might from the start...but that's where the Vipers punish them. That's when they actually try When you got a car designed AROUND an engine...you know it's a contender.

As for cars that can handle the twisties...America's got the best all around sports cars. In europe, where else do you have wide open spaces like the deserts of Nevada? In Australia, do you have the lush mountains of the Rockies as well as the wide open spaces of Colorado? I think not...that's why so many manufacturers come to Colorado for high altitude testing. While they're here, taking them out in the moutains, as well as the plains doesn't hurt. Enter the C5 Corvette. Best all around sports car in America Well IMO Watch out all you import fanatics, the Z06 is here to embarass you

DLC have no idea what he's talking about. Just the kind of guy that would turn his car to a ricecar.

900+ hp skyline in Aus?? Bah. The figure might look nice, but in practice, that car is useless. The only thing it's good for is drag racing.

Tell me, why doesn't Ferrari make cars with 900+ hp??

And stop saying bad things about US cars. I'm asian, and I drive an import. But Americans do know how to make good cars.
The Viper for an example. That car dominates Le Mans GT3. Skyline GTR is a nice car. But 24 hours of non-stop racing in that car?? I doubt it.

Anyone that says that a Subaru WRX or Skyline would whoop up on the Viper GTS needs to lay off the CRACK!!!!!!!!

You need to be hit up side the head!!!!! You're dissing a VIPER?? It's one thing to talk about it's styling, but the car will eat just about anything on the market. And quit dissing American sports cars. The Viper and Corvette will bitch slap 98% of the street legal cars available today.

<< this 4 cylinder turbo boxer engned car is quicker than nearly 95% of American junk cars... 0 - 100 KMPH in 5.0 seconds.. suck on that.. its not a V10, its a 4 cylinder and it blows most of you away. >>

That's right, you said it. 4-CYLINDER!! Need I say more? I think not.

The Viper (for the past 3 years ) and Corvette (just recently) DOMINATE in Lemans in the GTS class. The Viper has swept 3 years in a row.

You bring your Econobox Subaru WRX (Impreza) over here and I'll take a Viper and we'll see who has more fun. We'll see who get's the chicks too

Women KNOW what a Viper is. MOST men know what a WRX really is. But women will see the WRX for what it really is, a REALLY riced out Impreza

I think the title of this thread should be "Best all-around performance car for $50k-$100k"

The BMW M5 is not a sports car for sure.
The BMW M3 might be a sports car.

Although I'm not a big fan of it, the best sports car for the price range should be the Lotus Esprit.

Spec (from Autozine):
Mid-engined, RWD
V8 dohc twin turbo
3.5 l
349 hp
296 lbft
5-speed manual
1346 kg
172 mph top speed
0-60mph: 4.2 sec
0-100mph: 10.3 sec

Just for comparison, here are some 0-60 times:
McLaren F1: 3.2
CLK-GTR: 3.6
911 Turbo: 3.9
Diablo GT: 4
360 Modena: 4.2
Viper: 4.3
Lancer EVO VI: 4.4
Skyline GTR: 4.6
Impreza WRX VI: 4.6
Mustang Cobra R: 4.8
NSX: 4.9
Supra Turbo: 5.1

You give me $50-100k and I can build up a 1992 mustang to beat the hell outta almost anything. Heck, I could prolly do it for about $30,000 if you do not count paintwork. Stroked 302 to 347 cubes, Vortec supercharger with an air cooler (forgot what they are called) BW T56 6-speed, many many suspension mods, reduce weight by yanking the backseat. I am too tired to list it all. Heck, I could do it to a '65 fastback given enuf time. And then it would even LOOK good.
