Best All-in-one printer

Hey guys,

I have a friend who is looking for a printer for his girl for when they start school and he is looking for an all in one printer that scans, prints, and faxes. he wants to use it also for himself, but it's mainly for his daughters. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If a non-color printer is an option get the Canon MF3240 and don't look back. It's ~$150 most places but solid as a rock.

I have an HP that I'm pretty happy with. I got it for free when I bought a Macbook last year. I can't remember the model number though.

I've become a Canon fan. If he needs color, then:

is a decent (but perhaps not unbeatable) deal. Otherwise, there are some great B&W laser AIO's available for not much more than $100.

Watch out for certain Epson's and HP's...if you run out of ink, the whole unit might shut down until ink is replaced. It was mentioned in another thread somewhere. I have had a couple canon's...outstanding devices.

Sorry, let me 'splain myself a bit.

They don't need color. They can pay for color printouts if they need to for a project.

What they likely need is a reliable b/w printer and for that there are some decent lasers out there. You can even get into an HP for that price, however I don't have experience with the low end so I'd research/get recommendations there.

If they MUST have color, the printers in the $100 range are going to have the "issues" that all inkjets do. For people who print lots of color (if you don't, you can likely do w/o color) I recommend Canons by brand.

edit: also, all in ones...

The jack of all trades, master at none applies to every single one of these devices I have ever worked with. Swiss army knifes. Ever cut a tree down with the saw on a swiss army knife? Me either.

To start out with, one can get a half way decent color ink jet printer for a hundred, but you push it when you talk about having a flat bed scanner and copying, at least on the new market. But my definition of a junk ink jet printer is one that uses small cartridges and are non refillable because they will eat you out of house and home on consumables.

Right now I have a multifunctional brother laser printer that prints, copies, sheet or flat bed scans, and faxes in glorious living monochrome. And my wife has a single function canon IP4000, the last of the non-chipped Canon ink jets still going strong, we network both printers, and because I refill the Canon, I can print color for less than the the laser can print monochrome.

IMHO, a family with multiple computers and living under the same roof who do not network their computers are missing out on a great way to share devices. I have been networked for six years now, net cost, less than $20.00 for a sixty foot crossover cable.
