Best Alternative To Msn Messenger

I need help choosing the best replacement for MSN Messenger. I need an Instant messaging client that supports MSN Messenger (very good irc would be a bonus) , is very stable and is efficient when it comes to resources.


BTW: Tried Miranda IM but it's too buggy.

I prefer Miranda over GAIM. Only because I can assign a sound to an incoming message without having it pop up (when I'm playing a game).
